New Heavy Job

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to share some good news of my own. I just finished up co-pilot training last week on the DC-8. Due to D.O.D. contracts and company policy, we are bound by a confidentiality agreement so I'd prefer to leave the company name out of it publicly. But with that being said, I am thrilled and humbled at the same time to be a part of this.

It took a lot of networking to land the job and lots of requisite studying to get through training, but the pilot group is a great bunch of people and I'm very excited to get started. The systems groundschool was very detailed, but at the same time the systems are very rudimentary since the airplane is nearly 5 decades old. That actually helped me grasp a better understanding of how some of the systems on more modern aircraft that I'm familiar with function.

So far, it's been a great experience. Now that my checkride is passed, this is the time when I can really start learning about the airplane systems in depth, as well as how to properly fly on the line. I should probably start a few OE trips pretty soon. To sum all of this up, yeah it's a good job and yes I should consider myself quite fortunate, but I would suggest that you network, network, network - it's one of the most important things you can do to further your career because there are opportunities out there. There is nothing special about me except that I am a hard worker and have a positive attitude. I just knew a guy who knew a guy. Best of luck in your own endeavours and thanks so much for all of the valuable information that is available on jetcareers. Although I probably do a lot more reading than posting, I have learned a lot of valuable information here from many different people.

Congrats.

I had back to back early shows in Baltimore last week and both mornings taxied out behind the ATI DC8. It's a nice looking plane and man is it loud on take off.

Thanks guys! Should be very interesting and fun bird to fly.

Bob, I think ATI has 62 series combi's, 71's & 73's - if it was the 62 you heard depart, yeah it is a real noisemaker. The 70 series has CFM56 engines on it, which run a bit more quietly than the Pratt & Whitneys. Good morning BWI!

I think the 62s can only run in and out of MIA.

Congrats! Yeah the DC-8s are definitely an awesome airplane. Will you be working out of an airport just south of Detroit?

When I see threads like this (people getting jobs and really using networking, esp from on here), this is what I think:
