Passport Renewal

Soul Brotha'

Off to go do Black guy stuff
For those who have renewed their passport while employed at an airline how did you do it? The website and form I got said I have to hand in my current one which expires in 5/2011. But I need my passport to work and commute. Then I called the number and some guy told me I have to apply for a secondary/temp passport while my passport is being renewed. The only passport center in my state(FL) is down in Miami. I explained to him that I was an airline pilot and was there another to do this. He had no answers so I look to my fellow aviators for help.

Call your chief pilots office, they should have the procedure for you.

Yep... listen to jtrain.

This is a very common thing in the 121 world, and your CP will know how to help.

The basic gist of it is... you'll get a letter from your CP's office that states that you are an active crewmember for the airline and you are required to have your passport before your next trip. Have the CP state in the letter that your next trip is the following day of the day you are planning on getting your Passport renewed.

Call the Passport office in advance before you go. Many of them have specific times when they do expedited passports and others require an appointment anyway.

Take that letter to the passport office. Make sure it's one that can do same day, expedited passports (you may have to commute to one). Fill out the proper application and turn in the letter from the CP with it. You'll also need your Crew ID badge too.

Pay the expedited registration fee, and wait anywhere from 1-4 hours and you'll have your passport in hand.

Save the receipts and turn them in to your company for reimbursement (depending on your contract.).

Since you're still underneath the "Southernjets Umbrella" of sorts, you might be able to use CIBT to expedite your renewal free of charge. But I'd certainly talk to the CPO to see what the preferred procedure is.

If you work for a company that sets it all up for you, great.

Otherwise contact an "expeditor", tell them you are an airline pilot and have a letter that states a passport is a requirement of your job (make sure you have said letter).

It'll be a one or 2 day turnaround. (Unless the government is shut down. Then, well, hmmm...)

I had to turn in my passport to get special one made. I just told my base manager and he said ok. and took me off all of my canada turns. As far commuting goes, I am on my own.

Took you off Canada Turns? I've been doing so many, I may have to get my passport renewed for the next few months! This week alone is YYZ,YYZ,YHZ.

Someone I flew with had a clever way of getting his sister (non-airline) an expedited renewal. She works near one of the main passport offices and just wanted to get one same day for the heck of it. He created a buddy pass non-rev listing to some foreign destination, printed out the itinerary showing a departure the day after the appointment, then deleted the non-rev listing. When his sister took the print out of the itinerary to the passport office they accepted it and processed her renewal. She went in first thing in the morning to drop off the application packet and went back on her lunch break to pick up her new passport. This was Chicago.

The last time I renewed I went to the Chicago office in person. The people I met in line had all kinds of crazy stories. Airline employees aren't the only ones that need passports last minute. I made an appointment on that automated phone system thing and went in some morning. After dropping off the application I went to some bar and had an early lunch and a few beers. I came back when they told me to about noon and the new passport was ready. I hated burning time out of town on a day off for that kind of thing, but whatever. If you're looking for a place to commute to in order to get this done, Chicago isn't too bad since there's decent public transport from the airport to downtown where the passport office is.

I did the same just because it was easier than getting a letter. If you're on the left coast the new light rail in SEA takes you from the airport to within a few blocks of the passport office.
