NTSB investigating ATC request Southwest to intercept Cirrus

Re: NTSB investigating ATC request Southwest to intercept Ci

I have to say despite my feeling that these descriptions are too vague to pass judgement, I can't help but feel a little enjoyment with the fact it is another Supervisor screwing up. I know my mom told me that was wrong too.

Re: NTSB investigating ATC request Southwest to intercept Ci

Just added to the 2011 Cirrus models:

Remote activation chute. AD will be available in 2 weeks. Retrofit required.....

Re: NTSB investigating ATC request Southwest to intercept Ci

NORDO in a Cirrus? Surprised he didn't pull the chute.

"I said to Hollywood, where'd he go?"

"Hollywood says, where'd WHOOO GOOOOO!"

Re: NTSB investigating ATC request Southwest to intercept Ci

The pilot of the Cirrus SR22, a four-seat, single-engine aircraft, was flying at 11,000 fee
Planes flying at that altitude must remain three miles apart horizontally and 1,000 feet vertically
Eh?

It defies logic that if the pilot of one aircraft had visual contact with the other, and could maneuver in relation to the other, AND that the SWA pilot accepted the reduced separation voluntarily because of the possibility that the other aircraft might be experiencing an emergency, that IFR separation would not be an issue.

"By placing this passenger aircraft in close proximity to another plane, the air traffic controller compromised the safety of everyone involved,"

Where is that eye-roll icon?

This just defies common sense.

Re: NTSB investigating ATC request Southwest to intercept Ci

That goes for all the tired ones. "over-square" "flaps in flare", etc. I don't understand how people think they are still clever.

Seriously, it's like when someone throws that joke out there for the billionth time, they think that they are beaing clever and funny when in reality it is just people being lemmings.

Re: NTSB investigating ATC request Southwest to intercept Ci

Bringing aircraft into relatively close proximity without prior planning and coordination is not a good idea.

Poor judgment all around in my opinion. There are lots of other ways to check on that aircraft that don't involve a passenger airliner.

Exactly. Unannounced formation flying with a 737 full of people and a Cirrus that might be being piloted by a complete idiot sounds like this to me:

Close enough to spot the Cirrus is one thing, close enough to see into the cockpit is another.

Unbriefed formation flying is a disaster waiting to happen. There have been MANY tatal crashes because of it.

I too, fail to see how the controller is responsible for this.
