Distinguished Road?

You photographers are complete bastards and particularly photographers that share. If I could give you a million negative points I would.

If the comment had read, "photographers are the biggest threat to the union and freedom everywhere" I would agree with you.

We all know digital images are the devil's tool.

Anyone who puts any real stock into the reputation system here and takes it to heart emotionally or in a sensitive manner, one way or the other, needs to have their head examined.

Most of us won't. But some of us will. It just seems like a stumbling block for those who haven't quite reached the point beyond that.

HEY! Wait a minute... are you trying to bait me again? You're so cute when you do that. Such a master at it, too.

Agreed. Which raises the obvious question, why have it at all?

Haha....no, no bait. :) Am just saying that there likely will be people who will get depressed/angered by a negative rating, or pompous/inflated by a positive rating; all of which truly mean nothing in the big scheme of things. So for anyone to actually hang their hat on what some aribitrary "reputation" system on this forum is telling them their worth is, they need to evaluate their priorities in life. :)

Of course, I guess there might too be people pompous/inflated by a negative rating......or those depressed/angered by a positive rating too. :D

:yeahthat: ... but we already know why. Doug's doing a 'social experiment'. I've just changed my mind- this should be a reward incentive program. Whoever gets trended positive should be marked "socially acceptable" until they reach the highest level, whereupon they'll be inducted into a sort of "super secret inner circle" thingie. Whoever gets trended negative should be marked "a giant poopyhead" until they bottom out. Then they get.. how is it we're saying it these days? "Voted off the island"? Yep. Just like 'Survivor'. :sarcasm:

Actually, those who start trending too far negative are getting automatically banned, just as those who are trending too far positive will be.

:)

Not everybody in the world is this self-aware. Believe me, there was a point where I could say that about myself. If people who haven't turned that corner don't read this thread, they might take it to heart. Those people might be the ones with the ideas we need to make the next step in whatever we're doing, or furthering our understanding.

Wait, I know. We could totally just make a historical reference to make it clearer that it's not to be taken seriously. We could have users with positive ratings use avatars that say "SS" in big letters, and users who trend negative could just have avatars with big yellow six-pointed stars. Wait- didn't somebody already do that once? :sarcasm:

That's what I meant by 'voted off the island'. That's what the user status of the recently banned says. That's funny though- banning those who trend too far positive. Can't have anybody get too far from the rest of the sheep...er.. I mean... users. Ha!

You're totally right. But I can't talk to you right now- the little thingy over your avatar is Red. That means you're a Red Communist. :sarcasm:

Yes, thanks to all the generous people who decided to trend me negative. Which it appears that I received -6 votes from the Charlie Sheen thread and the "Should we fire the Hero" thread. I don't know how I got negative votes by posting a hilarious interview video with Charlie Sheen..? But okay. And I know in the other thread, where I was in agreement with 80% of the poll, I received a handful of negative votes because they simply didn't agree with my line of thought (or 80% of the other voters line of thought either).

HEY!! I DON'T AGREE WITH YOU AND WE HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS! I'M GOING TO GIVE YOU A NEGATIVE VOTE! THAT'LL SHOW YOU! MUWHAHAHA!

Wow. Really? I think this reputation system is a horrible idea.

(go ahead, vote me negative because I have an opinion and it doesn't fit yours)

Exactly......banning for too far positive. The best thing is that no one will actually know where "the line" is that can't be crossed, either in the positive or the negative direction, that will get them banned. A little psywar ops for the forum users here: Give them hope, then take it away. Rinse, repeat. :D

People fear change. Or things that are different. *Especially* when the person offering a different point of view comes from a stronger place as they perceive it. People love to tear down something or someone greater than they see themselves. It's a sad fact that many people fall into that hole at some point in their lives. But hey- rather than talk about it, why not just further enable it by giving them "stealth bitching rights"? Don't let the haters phase ya.

Just something I'm noticing, it's really quite annoying indeed when people give out negative rep and leave a comment of '.' It really defeats the purpose...

A few days after implementation, I'm not a huge fan of the system at all....as COA is saying, I think it's going to turn more into 'do you agree with me?" than "is your information good and are you being a general ass about it?" I think it will defeat the purpose as new members look and think the info is good, when really all the rep is from making fun of SJSers and liberals.

Holy smokes, you guys really know how to take something that's quite simple, ridiculously over-analyze it and infer all sorts of points that really have nothing to do with it's intended purpose (or that haven't appeared in other application of that thing), and then form strange opinions based on that over thinking.

Exactly. We live in a perfect world where simple things remain simple and serve their intended purpose completely. When the system works for one application, it automatically means that it will work for every application thereafter.

No need to do any more thinking; everyone just shut up and go watch your American Idol. :D

Critical thinking is many times in short supply, but the fact is NOT EVERYTHING requires that you endlessly ponder what it means in the grand scheme of things.

In this case, you have to weigh the amount of effort put into whinging and worrying against what the possible outcomes and impacts are.

Seriously, dudes. This is an internet forum. Apply your efforts appropriately...something I don't see in all the hand-wringing and worrying about what a popularity contest this whole thing will become and what the implications are for the humanity and awareness of the participants of this forum. C'mon now, really?

That's the problem; you see the discussion in this thread as "whining" and "worrying." Another problem is that you, apparently, believe that this system is one of those things where thinking doesn't need to be applied to. Why do you not want people to think about it? Why are you putting everyone's efforts down by saying that they are whining and worrying? Do you choose these specific words in hopes that others will be deterred from doing any more thinking because it'll be seen as "whining"?

Come on, man. :)

Exactly.....oooooooover thinkin' it. Prime example.

By the way...it's "whinging"...not "whining".
