The University of Oklahoma and Pinnacle announce direct hire

Re: The University of Oklahoma and Pinnacle announce direct

There's a provision to count undergraduate aviation credits against the 1,500 rule.

Unless they took that out of the bill?

Calm down everybody, the requirement for the ATP is still in the bill:
http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=111_cong_bills&docid=f:h3371rfs.txt.pdf

HR 3371 has a provision to allow the Administrator to allow certain collegiate training courses to be credited towards the flight hours requirement of the ATP. I have not heard any specifics regarding this, but it IS NOT what the Piedmont bridge program is. I seriously wonder if the FAA is even going to touch this mess, as it sounds like a huge cluster. How the heck do you quantify a collegiate course in terms of flight hours? Is it going to be on a case by case basis? This is something we think the FAA is actually capable of doing?? I have my doubts.

I really have no idea how the airlines hiring these low time guys are going to handle this. From what I understand, the ATP requirement kicks in October 14, 2012. So the window of opportunity for the low time guys is probably going to be closing up soon. So, starry eyed SJS kids - you'll be SOL if you're just starting out. You'll have to gain experience like the rest of us did.

Do they teach English grammar at more prestigious?

Re: The University of Oklahoma and Pinnacle announce direct

Good God. Let's hope not. On the other hand, this will choke the supply of pilots applying to regional either way. The 1500 rule will kick in in 2013, or the "go here or go away" loophole they're trying to build into the rule will bottleneck the system. With a FOUR YEAR wait for replacement pilots.. Regionals would have to start raising pay to attract applicants from other sectors.

2013? The bill says three years from when it was enacted, which I thought was 10/14/2009 (making the ATP requirement on 10/14/2012)?

Re: The University of Oklahoma and Pinnacle announce direct

Don't you generally have to at least, you know, "interview" at most of these places? If I read the original post correctly, having managed to stay sober/awake enough to graduate with a 3.0 at a technical school makes you "simply the best".

No idea about the interview process and not saying I agree with it. Btw, not too hard to go to class hungover and get that 3.5+ gpa! At least here at the "prestigious" school of UND! haha

Re: The University of Oklahoma and Pinnacle announce direct

Ok, I'll admit "prestigious" was the wrong word to use. "Well known" would have been a better choice of words.

The legislation was a rider on the FAA reauthorization act, which became law on August 1st, 2010. The clock started ticking then. One year for rest rules, three years for ATP rules.

So it's a done deal? In august we will have new rest rules?

Re: The University of Oklahoma and Pinnacle announce direct

I hate to say this, but maybe DCA got this right...with the bridge type program being that you be flight instructor for 800-1000 hours then get the interview? Certainly must be better than 300 hour wet cfi just graduating college

Re: The University of Oklahoma and Pinnacle announce direct

If this crap starts up there goes any hope of people holding out for higher pay. "I can get a diploma and a class date to fly a JET at the same time? SMOOOOOOOOTH!!!1111111111111".

Yuck.

Re: The University of Oklahoma and Pinnacle announce direct

You have to realize that the last thing the regional airlines want is higher starting pay. The RAA STRONGLY opposes any effort to raise starting pay. They know that higher starting pay means higher pay for every other regional airline pilot and they do not want that cat taken out of the bag.

Also keep in mind that the regional airlines do not want long term pilots. The longer pilots stay at the regionals--the more money they make. The regionals would rather the experienced pilots "move on" so they can hire a cheaper pilot to replace him.

It's going to get really interesting over the next few months to see how this all is going to shake out. I expect 60% turnover at the regionals over the next 9-12 months and not enough pilots to replace that turnover.

Here's to hoping.

Thanks. I was trying to find that info, and it was surprisingly difficult for some reason. Maybe my googling just sucked or something.

Re: The University of Oklahoma and Pinnacle announce direct

WMU already has it. You have to have a min 3.0 GPA, no more than 2 checkride failures, and graduated in the last 24 months (no hour requirement and no need to do the CRJ jet course). If you meet these criteria, you don't even have to interview for the position!

Allegedly 7 from WMU have been called up.

Re: The University of Oklahoma and Pinnacle announce direct

Not surprising, what with Kalamazoo being just down the road from one of your bases. I think a lot of kids try to stick around the area and work at Pinnacle or Mesaba.

Don't forget about the Eastern kids right in 9E's backyard! ;)

Re: The University of Oklahoma and Pinnacle announce direct

What types of jobs would be exempt from the rule? Obviously non-ATP rated pilots could still CFI, but what else?

Re: The University of Oklahoma and Pinnacle announce direct

What disgusts me is during the post Colgan crash Washington hearings, Sully spelled it out for the law makers. You can't get better, more unbiased advice than his testimony. Yet loopholes still exist for pilots to go zero to hero. It really makes me sick. WTF was the point of calling "industry experts" if we just circumvent their advice? I'm leaving for greener pastures while this cluster hopefully blows over, i.e. better quality of life for pilot PROFESSIONALS here in the states. Un-be-flippin-lievable.

Re: The University of Oklahoma and Pinnacle announce direct

As sad as it is, I betcha my next workman's comp check that it's cheaper for these airlines to lawn dart in a 72 seat turbo prop every couple of years then compensate their pilots at a fair, livable wage. Go Capitalism!

Re: The University of Oklahoma and Pinnacle announce direct

What kind of times are the guys form WMU coming to 9E with?
