ANG and pilot training

I am skipping a semester at college to join the ANG and begin my pilot training at a local part 141 school. Will I be able to use the GI Bill to help pay for my training? Regardless I will be taking out a loan to pay for my training. Also, is it possible to work at the ANG for more than just two weeks a year and one weekend per month? Since I will be out of school I need something to do right? I am also thinking about volunteering at my local Civil Air PAtrol wing. What is the pay rate for a new recruit at ANG?

The GI Bill will help pay for your training. Your flight school should be able to help you get all that set up. While it is possible to work more than the minimum one weekend a month and two weeks a year at a guard unit, full-time positions can be tough to come by...especially for a brand new recruit. You may be able to get some "seasoning" days after training. You're more than likely looking at 3-4 months. However, budgets are shrinking like crazy so don't expect a lot of extra days from your unit. As far as pay, check out http://militarypayscale.org/2011-military-pay/

I am a bit confused by your "one semester" approach. Basic and technical training are going to take at least 4-5 months and as long as a year depending on the job you're trying to get into. Have you taken the ASVAB or have any idea which field you want to get into? There's a lot more to joining the military than one semester off from school.

I figure this semester and the subsequent summer will cover the training no? I haven't yet taken the ASVA, but I'm shooting for Aircraft loadmaster

I'm not sure. There's at least one loadmaster here on JC. You'd have to ask him about the training and its length. It takes time to join up so if you're serious about doing it don't waste any time. It took me almost 6 months from my first talk to my recruiter to swearing in. I didn't even leave for BMT for another 4 months after that.

Post your questions in the military pilots forum and you'll be more likely to get the answers you're looking for.
