New to jetcareers! Seeking some Guidance :)

Hello my fellow Aviators!

My name is Steve and I'm a 23 year old Instrument-Commercial pilot new to the forum and have interests of staying in the clouds for good!

I achieved my PPL on 10/22/07 my Instrument Rating on 01/25/09 and Commercial Rating on 10/2/09. There after I moved out of CT and I gave my CFI a shot flying out or American Flyer's in Morristown and to my dismay did not get the ticket yet, twice..

Here is some info about my flight career and any feedback would be greatly appreciated. My training was done in CT by CFA. The school was part owned by my father. Most of my learning was spelt taught while I was enrolled in a local community college in the Aviation Flight Science Degree Program for my Associates Degree.

I was using the Jeppesen Private Pilot and Instrument/Commercial Kits and the Gleim Test Prep Cd's. My father would help me with my studies when I had issues but was very busy with building the company and being the Chief Instructor so I replied on myself for the most part.

I found that the bulk of my knowledge came from my hands on training with my father and other instructors in the flight school even though the bulk of my time was in the books. The material just doesn't soak in like hands on training, I'm a visual hands on person, books were never my things. Now here I am in a dip, it's been 3+ years now since I was enrolled in the Private Pilot Course and feel the cobwebs starting to build.

Just looking for any opinions on what to do from books you would recommend to suggestions of taking a Private Pilot ground school (which I had never enrolled into before) as a refresher.

Any adviced will do. Thanks for taking your time to read all of this and welcoming me to the forums!!
 
What are you trying to accomplish, not really sure from your post? Are you just trying to stay current or thinking about taking another shot at the CFI?

I would stay away from the Jepp/Gleim stuff in preparing for the CFI Oral. They are great if you are studying for any of the written exam, or the Jepps for a classroom-type lecture.

You need to know more as a CFI though. In particular, study the Advisory Circulars for endorsements, stall spin, traffic patterns, etc. Know part 61 & 91 inside out. The FAA's Instructor Handbook, Airplane Handbook, and Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge too. And all of the PTS for every rating! Have printouts of all of them.

What was tripping you up on the Oral? Give us some more specifics, and I'm sure we can give you some constructive help.
 
I seem a bit rust on the private pilot knowledge. More the of technical knowledge rather then the flight aspect of things. For example, the aircraft systems, weather, and aircraft performance.

How are the kings courses? I know they are somewhat expensive but if i purchase individual dvds it shouldn't be to bad. Does anyone have experience with these courses?


Also does anyone know of exceptional flight schools in hudson valley NY? I looked up Richmore Aviation and they seemed to be the most qualified school. Qualified doesn't always necessarily mean they are the best or most helpful.

Weather- Aviation Weather (FAA Pub)
Performance - PHAK

Most of the information on the technical areas are in the PHAK, which is free to download from the FAA website.
 
I actually started with the PTS, then took a binder and broke down every section of the PTS section by section. I made my own lessons for each section and then added notes to back up everything (both for the ground and flying portions). In the end, I wound up with a huge binder that the examiner loved! A little over the top, but then you have everything at your finger tips and yes, you're supposed to know most of it by heart, but half of teaching is knowing where to look it up.
