I just experienced a living nightmare...

I get a phone call from my wife last night while I was at work (chucking bags @ PHX) telling me I needed to get home ASAP as my 19 month old daughter was having a seizure and that an ambulance was on the way.
Thankfully my mgmt let me go immediately and I ended up meeting the ambulance at St. Joe's downtown. The seizure only lasted 2 minutes or so, and my daughter was resting on my wife when they arrived. Ended up with the whole battery of tests (including a spinal tap) and thankfully everything came back negative. Apparently febrile seizures are caused by a sudden fever spike. (my daughter's was just over 103.)
We came home at around 1 am and put the baby to bed with us...Needless to say I got about an hour's sleep since everytime she so much as moved I was awake checking her...Ugh, no one tells you about this stuff when you become a parent.

Anyone have any experience with these seizures? Things to watch out for? etc?
 
No experience, but just wanted to say I hope everything is OK and you and Mom are feeling better as well.
 
Our son had a seizure after his DPT vaccine. It was really frightening. He got only DT vaccines after that and was ok.

103 is high for a little child. I'm glad she's ok now!
 
hope everything is ok, and stays that way.... i had a friend who's child did that up to age 4 and grew out of it, i cant imagine the feeling
 
When my daughter was just over 2 years old and I took her out of the bath, put her on the bed and she started shaking uncontrollable, then her eyes rolled back into her head. She scared the crap out of this dude me, yelled for my wife and we rushed her to the emergency room. By the time she was seen at the hospital, she was fine. She too had a fibrile seizure. I know how you felt and I'm glad everything is okay.
 
I hope she is feeling better and the seizures haven't returned. (They usually don't)

I have responded to 911 seizure calls over the years, including children. The high fever seems to be the common factor for febrile seizures. Your child's struggle to keep the temperature under control is probably tied to an infection and effects of Tylenol (or equivalent). If she was dehydrated and didn't have the ability to properly digest liquids....there goes the temp.

You probably heard from the hospital team....hydrate, hydrate, etc.

With my own kids, I have used Pediasure for hydration and liquid drops withTylenol for fever. Melt-aways are good for older children.
 
Agreed, I was going to say that the seizures are the infants body attempting to regain control of its temperature. If you can cool the core temp, the seizures generally subside, then the baby is exhausted for a while understandably. I went on many febrile seizure calls during m[y tenure on the fire department. Glad things worked out fine.

I’ve been there too. Nothing feels more helpless to a parent and more frightening than having a child in that type of distress.

When my now eight year old daughter was around two, she had several febrile seizures. Her temp was around 104. Like you guys, it scared the he## out of my wife and I. I took her to the emergency room and they ran all kinds of tests. The worst was when they tried to take her blood. I held her in my lap and after about ten (No exaggeration here.) attempts with the needle, they were unable to find a good vein. All she did was scream and sob “daddy, daddy.” By that time I was so frazzled I wanted to clock the phlebotomist. Turns out it was a nasty bladder infection. Once they started her on antibiotics it we got the issue under control quickly. Though they did run several other tests with urologists later.

BTW she is fine now. In fact she was mouthing off to me tonight after I spent two hours helping her with a report for school. Kids just don't appreciate the crap we go through for them. :)

I hope your little one gets better soon!

That's the wierd thing, she was drinking fluids all day (very watered down juice / rice milk) so hydration wasn't really an issue.

Luckily mine is young enough that there were tears and screams during the needle pokes (5 total) but once they were out, she was fine and recovered quickly emotionally.

Overall she seems to have to lasting affects. Except for my wife and I now being a tad paranoid (she slept with us again last night...more for my wife then the baby, but that's ok) so another night of no sleep for me since my daughter gravitates towards me while sleeping...

My daughter has never had a seizure but she spiked a high fever and was very lethargic, and was some what rolling her eyes into the back of her head. One of the scariest experiences of my life to date.

I can't image how scary that must have been but I am glad to hear things are well. Good luck man and keep us posted.
 
I should edit my last post to say that she has *NO lasting affects.....Thank God...

Maybe for her, but what about your nerves. My son has never had anything major except for a few stitches when he crashed into the coffee table. He had 4 stitches in his lip. The worst part was watching them stitch him up, and remove them. He had to be sedated with some powerful stuff, and seeing him laying there completely out of it broke my heart. But at least now he has a cool story to go with his scar.

Oh yeah, the first 2 nights we had her in bed with us and I barely slept 2 hours each night. Everytime she'd move or make a sound I was up checking on her...
 
Seizure cause doe to emotional stress, lack of sleep,certain medication or illness. It may cause permanent brain damage if it occurs more.Hope your daughter is fine now but continue with regular checkup for her.
 
Those seizures are not uncommon...hope all contnues to be well. As far as your job: I would never have asked my boss to leave. I would've yelled that I had to go and you would have seen a human shaped hole through the airport fence. Glad to hear things are fine!
