Can someone splain to me what the beat frequency oscillator button (BFO) is for an an ADF receiver? Des it have something to do with identifying the station?

Im not worried! Just wondering. I know its essentially useless, but might be worth some beers after I school my colleagues on the finer points of our cutting edge ADF radio's. :)

Alright now I'm curious.
Can anybody point to an NDB on skyvector.com where this would be needed?

I can't, but since the note in that technical attachment speaks to NDBs with A2A idents I'd assume this BFO stuff has been long since phased out. Maybe you can find one in Somalia or some other third world country? I've only had to ID and fly a half a dozen or so NDBs in the US and a couple in Canada. I only ever identified them the normal way, just like a VOR. Presumably these have A2A idents then?

As I recall the BFO switch is only used to IDENT certain NDBs. That said, there are not any in the US that I know of, in fact IIRC the instrument manual I studied way back when said that they were only in other countries. Britain specifically comes to mind for some reason, but that could just be because I think the british are generally backward enough to require a special unique setting for identification :D

in case you cannot tell the previous statement is laced with sarcasm and is in no way intended to demean or otherwise insult anybody. end disclaimer :D
