Referring to an airline by IATA code is stupid.

I could care less about the codes really, to me an airline is just an airline. I really couldn't care less which one in particular. And really, if the airport code isn't completely obvious can we please spell it out?
 
Dude, why don't you just google the obscure airport identifier. It saves me five letters of typing but you should google it. :sarcasm:

Did you hear about that pilot who was typing a blog about the airports he flew too? He got tendonitis in his wrists, got an infection and died. According to the coroner he died from typing too much. If he had typed 3% less letters he would have lived a long happy life.

When you have to use it all the time (nonrev listing, etc) it just becomes easier than explaining what random airline you work for. Same with airport codes. Is the gate agent going to know off the top of my head the nonsensical airport code for where I want to get my bag? Probably not. So "check it to SDF" it is.
 
Everything I use at work is IATA. When I go to a Delta ticket counter to buy zedfare on Island Air, the agent probably won't know the code of my company or the code for Island Air off the top of their head nor do they know the code for West Maui, and they'd have to look it all up. So I just tell them I'm with OO and I want a zedfare on WP from OGG-JHM-HNL. Saves 3 or 4 minutes. When I'm talking online or by text to people who are into the industry, they usually know all the IATA codes and we use them when we talk about airlines rather than typing the names out. Same thing as typing JP for Japan, CA for Canada or US for The United States. Not all of us on this board are airline pilots, however I don't see CFIs going "ZOMGZ WTF IS ACARS? FMC? JRHNBR? SPELL IT OUT". I only see IATA codes being used in threads where pretty much just people in the airline industry are participating. Just like how I only see military lingo in the threads full of military guys. No one gets on them about it, as they shouldn't. I'm almost convinced the some airline pilots shield themselves from ever learning airline's IATA/ICAO codes on purpose because they're so self-conscious they're worried that someone, somewhere, might accuse them of being a tool or a member on a.net. Like it matters.

I've got 200+ photos on jetphotos.net, I've flown places just to watch airplanes then come home. I get excited when airlines start new routes. Sometimes I go flying and play flight simulator on the same day. I have a few thousand dollars worth of model airplanes. I don't hide any of that stuff, and I don't try to compensate for it. Yet I'm sure we have a lot of lurkers who want to get into flying and have questions but are discouraged to post here because they are active members on a.net and they get excited when WN puts a new logo on an airplane. I dunno why everyone feels the need to pound their chest and talk about how much the industry sucks and how they hate it and anyone who loves their job is a tool.

Great way to make someone with a nascent interest in aviation who frequent the forums think we are bunch of pricks.

I took the point of the original post to involve posting on JC, not checking bags or loads or whatever. Anyway, not a big deal.
 
But lurkers wanting to get into the industry wont know the IATA codes! Lets get away from obscure identifiers and "IATA" codes. It doesnt take much more time to type the name.

As to the airline codes.. who cares?

My dream is to fly for LW and run the airplane over squared, not cancel IFR until I get to the gate in case I go off the side of the taxiway in a firery.....fireball, and tell ATC I am going to kilo pop suguuh pop. Maybe I'll pull the chute while I'm at it too.
