Insurance on a 310R for a low twin time pilot?

Cessnaflyer

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
A family member has a good lead for a nice 310R but right now the purchase factor is me with lack of twin experience. I currently have 973 TT and only 16.2 multi time and no MEI.

What should we expect for insurance and where are good places to look since I have never had to research aircraft insurance before.

I doubt you even qualify for the insurance, you will have to get some good amount of time on type before. Does the current owner as an MEI on the insurance? maybe you can make some kind of deal with him..

I can give you our broker, where are you, or the plane located?

Hire me to fly it. That will solve your problem.

Could be a problem, but I knew a few people at Cape Air who were hired (and hit the line as PIC in a 402) with <50 hours of multi.

Currently the aircraft is pilotless because the current owner just lost his medical. If I had to I have a few instructors around here that could get me a MEI in it. How much would that help insurance?

I don't know where you are, but the school I go to in Florida just got a 310, so the all MEIs will be able to teach in it soon. Only one can now.

Chris,

Your best bet is going to be to call a broker in the area that has a good reputation of working with the underwriters. A good broker is going to work hard for your business, meaning that they should be able to find out a good number for a premium per year with/without an MEI.

You'll have to get some time in type before you can act as PIC. I had a student buy a fairly new Baron after his multi ride, with roughly 15 hours multi and 1hr PIC, he was able to be insured after 25hrs in type with me.

Just remember, the broker works for you.

back a couple years ago i looked into getting non owner insurance on an aztec. I had about 500TT and almost zero multi. Avemco quoted me less than a grand a year for 100k hull and a 500k liability. AOPA wouldnt even touch me.

I am hoping we can split some time if this could all go through.

Thanks for the idea. I'll try my auto insurance broker to see if they do or know anyone that deals with aircraft.

I'll call our broker in the ATL area, he's a friend of OrangeAnchor and I'll see what he says. He might even be able to work something out for you.

His name is Jim Gardner and he's the VP of JSL Aviation Insurance. # is 678-983-4482. He's a retired Easter/Piedmont/UsAirways guy.

I pay $4k a year for insurance in my 1978 T310R. 1280 TT / 400 multi.

Insurance required me to have 2 hours instruction and 1 hour solo before carrying passengers.

I don't know what kind of numbers you will be quoted with your times.

It's a good time to buy insurance. If you can't get something you want, try a different broker. I'm talking 700TT/50ME insured in a 421 at 2 million smooth. A couple years back that would've cost $50k/yr.

Our insurance just let a guy with 1000/15 on our 310 insurance as a charter pilot.

Ok, but how much time in type, before he can actually go PIC with passengers?

If you can pay $$$$$ for insurance I`m sure you can put a brand new ME PPL pilot on a 310.

We have 2 pilots on our Seneca Insurance plus the owner, we all have different TT but about the same ME, just over 70TT back then, we all got asked 25 hours on type, we were interested in a 310 also and the quote and the requirements were the same but with less hull coverage.

You need to look beyond just the "who will give me insurance" question. If there is a concern among most insurance companies about you piloting this airplane at your experience level they feel there is a direct correlation between time in type and accident rate. Perhaps you should question some of them about type specific training and its impact on your insurance rate.
As a disclaimer I do conduct 10 training.

If I can be of any assistance please let me know. Aviation Insurance Broker/Corporate Pilot. Feel free to PM with any questions.

Best of Luck,

Brendon
