Got ripped off :( ... recording intercom/radio

Hi guys,

I need an adapter cable to record intercom from a GA plane. I already have a decent audio recorder with a mini stereo jack (3.5mm) input, but need to get the right adapter that also adjusts the impedance and level.

I have ordered what seemed to be the best solution from www.barns*****audio.com, paid for it via paypal and never received a shipment  No reply to emails and no one picks up their phone. I have been trying to get hold of them since one month. I assume they went out of business :dunno:

Anybody else has a good source?

Thanks and cheers,

Out of curiosity, what has been the timeline from ordering, to emailing, to now with them?

As mentioned, in total 1 month. I have ordered Sep. 22nd, first email about 10 days later as they promise same day shipping, second email a week later and since then about 10 unanswered phone calls and voice messages...

I will try to contact paypal though... Maybe I can at least get the money back.

paypal is fantastic about moneyback guarantees. Basically they'll say "ok we'll see what we can do"

they'll try to contact the seller and if they do get in contact they'll see what's going on. if the seller does say they shipped it, paypal will need proof.

since you're the one starting the case, they're gonna protect you until the end and assume the seller is a scammer

source: having been through lots of cases (ok maybe only 3 cases overall) on ebay as well as paypal because I'm addicted to ebay shopping and a lot of chinese sellers are scammers

Ok, didn't work for me. As I didn't buy through Ebay, there is no money back guarantee.

Anyway, I still need a cable, no ideas? I guess I should ask 160kn Frank. His recordings sound pretty good...

I've had a case on paypal without using ebay. Got my refund.

Good luck with the whole deal man! I hate to see internet scammers, it really ruins the trust of online buyers.

If you bought it on ebay and paid via paypal-they will return your money back. Once you open a claim with paypal-the whole process will take up to 2 weeks then you will get my money back.

He didn't buy it on eBay, but paypal will still do a case and whatnot.

Hopefully paypal is good for ya, I mean nothing is ever perfect so maybe it won't workout

Ok, today I reached a customer rep at paypal that actually knew what he was doing ;-)

I filed a so called "manual claim" and in about 10 days I should know more!

I still need the adapter though ;)

as far as the adapter, unfortunately I've never owned or been in charge of operating a GA aircraft (or any aircraft really) so I've never had to even think about that adapter.

Well, things are progressing somewhat. I received this funny and cryptic message from Paypal:

[...]
[FONT=&quot]We have concluded our investigation into your case and have decided in your
favor.

You have indicated that a partial refund of 0 would be satisfactory.

If the seller's account has insufficient funds to complete the refund owed
to you, please be assured that we will take appropriate action against the
seller's account, which may include limitation of the seller's account
privileges.

[...]

So I guess I will receive $0 now :-o

I had Paypal do that to me. They ruled in my favor, but the seller had no money, so I got nothing. Luckily, I used my Mastercard through paypal, and they took care of it for me.

Ok, ...to close this thread:

The good: I bought a tiny condenser mic that can be placed in the earcup of my headset. Gives the most "natural" sound experience. I am happy with my $19.99 solution.
The bad: No money back from Paypal
The ugly: Seller has obviously no money, so I lost $38

I wonder if I should make the name of the company public, as you can still place orders there and you can still pay via paypal. They don' seem to care either !?

The best tool we have against bad sellers is information. Tell us all about them and we make sure we won't get anywhere near them.

Hit them where it hurts (their pockets)

Most Radio Shacks should have the cable. I forget the part number, etc but I have several cables for the purpose you describe. Less than $10 if I recall correctly. After 6 years of ocassionally recording in flight, I have zero negative comments.

I have a question:

Some of the airplanes I rent, I can hear myself when I transmit. Some I cannot.

If I were to record simply through the headphone jack on the headset I could theoretically get all the transmissions over the frequency EXCEPT if I have the type of comm where you don't hear yourself speak, is my assumption correct?

If so: Wouldn't it just be a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter? I don't know much about the specifics of ohms and impedance on GA Headsets so I may be way outta line

OK, so here we go.

DO NOT order from www.barnstormeraudio.com
. They take your money (via Paypal) but never ship anything. No responses to email either and you only talk to their answering machine when you call the number on the webpage. Even Paypal was not able to refund my money as the sellers account has zero funds.

Just the adapter won't work because of impedance issues (it won't be loud enough) and because of humming you might get. Therefore the known adapters change the impedance. The easiest way I found and liked was the use of the miniature microphone I bought.

Gotcha.

I'd like to start recording my long cross country flights not only for fun but so I can later listen to what I can improve in my communication skills.

The million dollar question is: Is there some sort of recorder that can be auto activated as we talk? (as in: When somebody mics in it records and when you click out it stops?)
