"Sioux" callsign may end

Dean Smith calls for it to end, I'll copy and paste a excerpt from the Herald.

Smith pointed out an unusual use of the Sioux name little known to the world outside flight: UND’s aviation students use it as their flight call sign.
Because giving out full aircraft identification numbers and names often involves long strings of letters, numbers and names, shortened versions often are used for practical reasons in the aviation business, Smith said.
UND’s students are known by a call signal that includes “Sioux” and usually the last two digits of the tail number, he said.
Whether the student is flying over Omaha or Atlanta, control towers recognize the call name, Smith said. It’s more than simply a convenience, he said. It also is a safety factor because it quickly lets airport authorities know it’s a student pilot, Smith said.
Several years ago, his department quit using it because of the nickname controversy, Smith said. But the Federal Aviation Administration asked UND to resume the use of the “Sioux” call name simply because it is so well-known and useful, Smith said.
But it’s not essential, he said.
“We can change it, and we will,” Smith said, if the task force and Kelly decide such a use must go.

Not necessarily. I still do not believe they will get rid of the callsign because it is an "official" FAA callsign.

Well this makes about as much sense as telling Sioux62 to line up and wait.

Joe

perhaps i don't understand your point, but at GFK Line up and wait is pretty much a necessity when you are sitting number 5,6,8, etc for takeoff.

I doubt it will change. It has nothing to do with the settlement, and as the article said, the FAA prefers we use it.

Just out of curiosity, what was the callsign when "Sioux" was temporarily dropped?

warrior 242ND...ie no callsign

We're becoming a Delta subsidiary next month anyways, so we get to use the big boy callsigns. CFI's now must make the jet whine noise at all times that the engine is operating.

Just kidding, but seriously, there are other options for callsigns.

Change the callsign from "Sioux" to "Ice cube" and be done with it. It's not that hard. When I was there back in 90 thru 95 they were fighting with the Indian's to be able to use the Sioux mascot- tomahawk chop, etc. If it offends them, just stop. Don't take 20 years to do it....

Given that it took the FAA 10 years to "officially" go to LUAW over TIPH, I'll believe the dropping of the Sioux callsign when I either:

a. See the notice, or;
b. We get told to stop using it by Flight Ops.

Too be honest it doesn't offend the Native Americans. It offends some UND faculty but more specifically it offends Myles Brand head of the NCAA, Mr. Kelley must not use President with his name and Mr. Athletic Director Faison. To a little less of and extent after persuasion the State Board of Lower Education is now offended.

The school already has approval from the Spirit Lake tribe. Approval from the Standing Rock tribe was not awarded because of many reasons. Partly a lack of a real democratic system, a little bit more because of something they decided years ago and to a great extend the fact that they have more pressing issues. I just hope the people who were offended get a warm fuzzy feeling when they think they helped to make this world a better place.

Because I know I will be called out upon it. last I remember from polls about 1/3 of the North Dakota Sioux population thought it should change.

Myles Brand, former head of the NC$$. He died last year.

They could change the callsign to "Soo," as in the "Soo Line," "Soo Locks" and "Sault Ste. Marie." :)

Citation II internship posted on climb to 350 dot com. Are they still giving out Citation scholarships at UND?
