Aerosim Academy

Anyone here attending or planning on attending Aerosim Academy?
How much of a difference has Aerosim made since taking over the old Delta Academy? Any Rumors on changes?
I am attending in January at the Houston Campus.

Depends on what you want to do. Don't pay any money in advance to these people because your money is not protected.

As of today only California, Utah and Colorado have protection laws in place for the students. Don't pay any money in advance. to anyone, unless the money is protected by a tuition trust fund.

I am not paying anything even when I do start training in January. The post 9/11 GI Bill covers everything, so schooling is free as long as I pass my college classes with it.

Just make sure they do not ask you to pay first and then wait to get reimbursed by the GI bill later. That is an old scam used by some of the schools that do not even qualify for the GI bill acceptance.

Thanks for the advice, I know Delta Connection Academy didnt have the best reputation for they way they operated their business. ATP has been know to rip people off too. I know Delta Connection Academy got bought out by Aerosim I am trying to figure out what to make of them and their operations.
I get out of the Army in a few months and I am limited to Aerosim because that is the only school covered by the post 9/11 gi bill in Houston.

Here are all of the Part 141 schools in Texas. This is from the FAA website. I believe the Houston area code is 281 so those in the 281 area code should be close to you. Most of them should be able to accept your GI bill.

I also have a question about Aerosim Houston. Went by there a couple of days ago for a walk through of the facilities. Hadn't flown a Seminole or Cirrus, so I was curious if the planes were compatible with my flying style, so wanted to "test the waters." Had a Discovery Flight with a CFI Brandon Williams who was superb. I was impressed with both the instruction provided and the airplanes.

. . .now, the scheduling. This Saturday morning, I went in with a newly certificated pilot for an impromptu Discovery Flight for him as well. He had no multi or complex flight time, so I figured I would introduce him to the same treatment I received. Oops, didn't happen.

1. Aerosim Houston shuts down at noon on Saturdays, and they are not open on Sundays. Have I missed something here? Is this a cost saving step to not fly during periods when most working people have free time to fly? Needless to say, I took my $400 elsewhere (we did a R22 helo intro as well :D) but that doesn't seem like a sound business practice. Is it working?

Some of the large "Academy type" schools are closed on weekends. It's not that unusual. The management usually works 5 days a week. Stuff happens on weekends when they aren't there and they know it. So that is the reason for the light weekend schedules.

. . .which I understand completely. From my perspective with a business background, it doesn't sound like a "profitable/sound" management "practice." The academy is a "business" and it is definitely a "for profit" organization. Most people know general aviation activities are seven days a week. Understanding "overhead" expenses incorporated with working the weekend, it seems for those "Academy type" schools, staying open during the weekend and marketing that point of fact would draw a considerable amount of business to the school. I've seen many school work Sunday, but take Monday off given the fact it's the beginning of the work week for the majority of general aviation pilots. Additionally, planes generate no income sitting on the ground. Many GA pilots would fly after normal business hours if they knew the flight school/FBOs are receptive to the needs of the pilots. Maybe they've researched their data/maybe not. I do know if a had a Cirrus in the Houston area for rent, the plane would be flying the majority of the day/seven days a week.

I was previously an instructor over at what was then DCA and is now Aerosim. I can certainly give you more details in a more private setting, but I will give you some info here.

First of all, the instructors (including Brandon Williams, with whom I am quite good friends with) are absolutely great people. In fact, if AFA Houston has anything going for it, it is the people. That being said, there are a lot of problems that I feel shouldn't exist (we can discuss those via PM, if you wish).

Your level of training will be high. You will dig a bit more into details, books, and whatnot than at some other schools. Your instructors will ensure that you truly understand the material. Their goal is not to just get flight time from you or to just teach you to pass the checkride; they'll want you to truly succeed. Again, that is because the people are great there, not because of the company.

The aircraft are very shiny and nice. With the new management (Aerosim), they have reopened your ability to do your training in a C172. While the allure of climbing in and out of the SR20 everyday is very strong, I would say save the money and fly the Cessna!

Please PM if you would like some more details!

PS: I'd like to add one to the above list:

I know the marketing director over at Aerosim.

They're going for a fresh start with the new owners and a new business model.

The whole Delta Connection thing was a looooooong time ago and many administrations ago.

Thanks for all the replys
Mr Taylor thanks for your insight, its reassuring to read your oppomestic post about Aerosim. Given your credentials and all...
MichaelC thanks for your infomation as well, ill send you a PM with more questions about Aerosim Houston.

I have alot riding on my decision to attend Aerosim. I am leaving my secure job in the military to attend Aerosim and enter the Aviation industry. I am using the post 9/11 GI bill to pay for the Aviation degree it comes at no cost.

I sent an email to their info@aerosimacademy email as well. Hopefully, it will be forwarded to the marketing director for consideration. Like I said, I can "understand" the perspective of being able to oversee operations by management during key periods of operation, but NOT flying but a half day on Saturday and not at all on Sunday from a "business sense" doesn't strike me as a sound financial practice. Aerosim is not Chick-fil-A (not open on Sundays) but it would be nice to understand their rationale especially as it relates to whatever target aviation sector they are trying to recruit for their programs.

. . .which I won't argue.

Too funny! Yes, Brandon was superb. I had done a Seminole orientation ride because I've flown a few multis except a Seminole and I wanted a perspective before I jumped hot and heavy into training. After my experience, I did what I was supposed to do and came back and to tell everyone about the positive experience. I RECOMMENDED to others they go and have the same experience with Brandon and the airplane I had. They did. . .and were met with "oh, we don't do weekends." Now, that's fine, but that's income lost to another flight school. If it doesn't matter to them, that's okay. We don't have many Cirrus airplanes in the Houston area; the Cirrus experience is profitable as much during the workday as it would be during the weekend.

Oh, by the way. My first Discovery flight YEARS ago? Done with N9837U!

There is a lot of [bureaucratic] politics that go into the weekend schedule. For Saturdays, if there are enough flights to fill the day, they'll stay open. They won't do night flights, however. You won't catch management DEAD there on a Saturday, though.

Sundays are the only days off that the instructors get. Unlike non-academy styled schools, the instructor doesn't make their own schedule. As you'll find out, you tell the right people when you're available, you're assigned an instructor, and they are told when to be there to be with you.

OK, I understand their perspective. There are ways to improve the schedule in order to benefit customers, instructors, and management. I'll make a recommendation to management.
