Obama Proposing $50b Spending Bill - Runways, Roads

That's all well and good, but one paragraph took me by surprise:

The goals of the infrastructure plan include: rebuilding 150,000 miles of roads; constructing and maintaining 4,000 miles of railways, enough to go coast-to-coast; shorter, high speed rail projects; and rehabilitating or reconstructing 150 miles of airport runways, while also installing a next generation air navigation system designed to reduce travel times and delays.

What are they talking about? RNP? Q-routes?

Should have just kept the shuttle running, those are thousands of jobs lost right there. The space station was just recently fully completed..now we cant even get to it.

We could certainly use some infrastructure improvements in the northeast airport system.

Plus I'd love to see domestic usage of CPDLC as well.

I remember seeing a painting of SAN in the early 30s where the airport had a huge circle made of grass and aircraft just landed directly into the wind.
An aerodrome. There's at least one left in England, my friend went there. No runways. There's a big windsock in the middle, and the pattern is always in to the wind. Wednesday afternoons are for cross wind landings.

Just what the Obama administration needs to do right now, spend more money we don't have. I thought I learned something in college that spending money you don't have is a bad thing.

Sounds a bit dangerous if the wind is shifty, but convenient otherwise.

When I was at Sun N' Fun this year the FAA both had something about NextGen. It seemed more of an ATC upgrade routing traffic to try to avoid having to put planes in holds and reduce conflicts. They probably have something about it on their website.

(We haven't even spent the last stimulus! Good grief!)

It's not really about spending money, it's about printing it. The only way to maintain the patrician deathgrip on the throat of the middle and working classes is to pretend that the great Scam can continue with just some special Fed magic printing-press work. Don't worry, go back to sleep, you'll wake up with a Hummer, a big screen, and a McMansion...this was just a bad dream.

Of course what really happens is our wild west kleptocracy turns in to a new feudal state. Now get back to work.

I've got bad news for you, holmes; we've always been a feudal state, and while we think we're free men, we're little more than serfs. Instead of being tied to the company store, we've sold our soul to the even larger multinational corporation.
