One of my Dads company pilots works there, other then for the salary he loves it.
What is the salary like for an fo? captain? How does seniority work when you are a foreigner?

I went through the interview process about 6 months ago. I am a foreigner living and working in Panama. I got the offer, but did not accept for multiple reasons. This is the pay from the offer letter they send 737 FO new hires:

•Base Salary - $2,120.00 (this amount is taxable according to Panamanian fiscal law).
•Per Diem – 63 hours -$630.00*
•Benefits: all that applies to our group of pilots (health insurance, life insurance, flight tickets, etc.)
*An additional $ 468 per month is paid at the completion of training.

You will also be required to attain and pass the Panamanian ATP written (based off the FAA) and flight exam. The general consensus is that Panamanian pilots like it and foreign pilots don't. There is a Panamanian pilot union who's goal is to protect Panamanians (i.e. take away from foreigners).
Also, please look at cost of living before considering the move. A decent apartment in a decent part of town will run at least $1300/mo.

This can be a nice opportunity for someone. Just do your research.

Someone asked about seniority. It is a combination of date of hire, hours, and whether or not you are Panamanian.

Foreigners will upgrade (5000tt, 1000 in type) if there are no Panamanians able to upgrade (4000tt, 1000 in type).

Copa hires a LOT of 250hr pilots. I believe the foreign requirement is 1000tt.

Are pilots able to commute? I don't guess you can really jumpseat on US airlines to get to Panama being how Copa is not a US airline.

Copa has flights to the US and South America. But why just don`t move to Panama? is it really that hard to leave the US?

The pilot that use to fly for my Dad lives in Guatemala City, personally I would live there instead of Panama City.

how competitive are mins...being a foreign pilot how do they look at you if you have ATP mins...just curious

What about citzenship from a Central American Country? Or is it just panamian pilots that get hired at 250?

Only Panamanians can have a min of 250hrs TT. Everyone else must have a min of 1000hrs. TT. for F.O. positions.
Captains, a min of 5,000 TT.

Dont look to get hired by them. They prefer to hire from Mexico (due to language, and lower pay) and with the more than 1,200 pilots let go from Mexicana, they have pleanty to choose from.

Remember Latin American companies will always hire pilot that speak the spanish language first before considering gringos.

It is fair. How many people in any other country in the world can afford to become a pilot, compaired to the United States? Not many.

If America was just as poor as any other country there wouldnt be that many pilots and we might in fact have to hire expats.
But we have the means to have a super high percentage of people certified as commercial pilots. Thats the reason airlines are hiring pilots with over 5000hrs. and not 250hrs. We have to many qualified pilots with not enough positions to fill.

The classic, supply & demand.
