Instrument, commercial and CFI at American Flyers

Busy airspace may not necessarily be a good thing for a student, for one thing, it's busy.

Try schools in Florida or Arizona if you want to save money. Especially in Florida, the cost of doing business there is much lower for flight schools.

The Daytona area has some reasonable priced flight schools. Don't pay anyone any money in advance no matter what kind of "deal" they offer you.
I visited the folks at Ultimate Air in Daytona a few weeks ago. It's a small school, but they have everything you need and their prices were about as cheap as I have seen anywhere and still be legitimate.

Right now, I would avoid any flight schools in Arizona since the state has now declared 80% of them as hobby schools and not for the professional career pilot.

Nimrod, disregard this post. There is nothing wrong with the majority of the schools in FL. There is nothing wrong with a pt61 school, as the article quoted above seems to suggest. As a matter of fact, the schools that http://www.jetuniversitysucks.com/ has brought up are pt141 schools. And Joe seems to be on some crusade to rid the world of flight schools that he doesn't like, or has personally visited. Just do your homework. And if you have a real concern, vist the Better Buisness Breau website and see what kind of complaints and how it was resolved to see if the school has a bad rap.

And Joe, quit it man. Your making yourself look silly. Since when was the last time any government agency other than the FAA had any true knowledge of how good a school really is anyway. Even throwing the FAA out on that one is a stretch. To cast a blanket over 80% of schools in AZ just because the state says they are a hobby school, and JetUsucks doesn't like them. Really. I mean really. Then I guess 80% of all flight schools are hobby schools, because AZ is no different than anyother state when it comes to the nature of flight schools. Don't let a few peoples bad experinces ruin it for everyone.

Edit to add:
Jet University Sucks says the ruling effectively declares 80 percent of Arizona flight schools as "hobby schools" and recommends that career-bound pilots avoid them. The ruling doesn't appear to actually change the status of the Part 61 schools; the group has interpreted it to mean that "Arizona becomes the first state to declare all non-141 flight schools to not be for the professional career pilot."

This is what JetUsucks thinks. Not what the state thinks.

Thank you everyone for your help. You made me think about where to go (and also made me a bit confused).
If I sum the things you said, the reason not to go to American Flyers is the price.
They estimated the training for instruments, commercial and CFI at the price of approximately 37,000$. Do you think it's way too expensive?
Are there any other reasons not to go there?
I understand it's a bad place to work - but you can guess I can't and don't want to work there.

Thank you again,
Nimrod

I will be doing my CFI at Flyers in Pompano, Fl next week. Check back in with me on 10th of October. :D

Hi Nimrod,

Some decent advice here. A couple of things:

1) Absolutely, positively, DO NOT PAY anyone up front. Read this line until it is BURNED into your brain. Pay as you go ONLY! A lot of places want you to pony up money up front...that's how they make their margins, by using your money to make them interest. You are MUCH better off getting a checking account and paying , and cutting a check every flight. Or you can get a credit card that you pay off every month (interest free) and you can even get cash back with some

2) See point 1. If you ignore everything else I type, fine, BUT repeat point 1.

I would recommend American Flyers. And recommend doing your training in LA or San Diego. I've had tons of foreign students and they want to have some fun and enjoy the US outside of training. Southern California is the place to be. Tons to do and see. Yes, it's more expensive but flight training is expensive anyway, so when you factor in a couple hundred dollars more a month for rent it's not a big deal. The weather is awesome, so you can fly more often which will save you money and time in the long run.

I would also strongly agree with the previous poster about not depositing a lot of money up front. You'll probably have to give some up front to get the visa process going. But after that, just deposit a couple thousand at a time. Gives you a little bargaining power if you don't like something that is going on. You can always transfer to another 141 school, the process is fairly easy.

Look into allatps.com I would suggest them over American Flyers. I've done training at both schools but I think the multi time at ATP is worth the extra...
