Talked to Colgan...

They (Colgan) brought their newest Q400 to MEM yesterday and had it on display for a few hours. I must say I thought it was a VERY nice airplane. Ive seen the Q around on trips but never got a up close tour of it. Nice roomy flight deck, decent room in the cabin (im 6'4 and can stand up in it, I cant even do that in the CRJ-900 )....Good space between the seats too, I was overall very impressed by it...;)

You should never fly it...it will ruin your first impression. One hand on the yoke and the other on the.....rudder trim.

I wouldn't necessarily say that. It's the "total applicant".

I tried to at less press her on numerics, but it just isn't a numbers game.

I hear ya. I have to say though that I have this sudden urge to not add any paid single engine piston time to my logbook.

Yeah, I went out there. Was more excited to see TA (guy's initials, not anything to do with a contract) since I hadn't seen him in a LOOOONG time. At least not since he left 9E to go over to 9L.

You can have an ATP WITHOUT passing the written? Damn, I did something wrong. :)

LOL really? Man from what the guys were telling me they really enjoyed flying it.

If they were in the leather jacket club, it is very likely they would have told you they loved it. In all actuality from someone who has a couple hours in the plane, it is not an enjoyable plane to fly. Some mistake a large abundance of power and moderate speed for flying characteristics.

I am not being a Debbie downer or bashing the company at all, just in my oppinion saying that given a list of criteria of what makes a plane nice to fly that this plane falls short.

It is:
very capable
can carry boatloads of ice with minimal handling or speed degradation
hauls a load
strong short field characteristics
fast (only when compared to other turboprops)
comfortable

Sure.

They're seeing quite a few furloughed pilots apply, some apparently from places like United.

But remember it's NOT a numbers game.

I interviewed on the Aug 12th, and just got the call. I'll be in training on Sept 7th.

1400tt, 400 multi.

Just to confirm, the airlineapps section for Colgan seems to be for non-pilot positions and the way to apply is to send a resume to the email address listed on the website?

No, there are pilot apps on there as well. That is where I applied. I'm not where I can go click around to find it for you, but it is there.

For those that interviewed, what is the dress policy like? Is it business casual or business professional (e.g. suit). I have both, just wanted to know what to bring.

I got the call the next morning after I applied. I filled out all that stuff on airlineapps, talk about a pain in the butt, and now am waiting to hear back from HR. I'm so happy I decided to make an excel logbook 2 years ago, it really saved me for this one! :)

ANYTIME you interview for any job, you should dress to impress. I'd wear a suit to an interview. You'll look more professional than the guy that showed up in Dockers and a nice collared shirt. Always better to overdress than underdress when you're trying to make a good first impression.

With the exception of 1 guy, everyone was in a suit in my group. I didn't count, but there were 15-20 of us there.

I can guarantee the guy w/out the suit didn't get offered the job.

Ever hear of the phrase, "don't be that guy".....well, go ahead and don't wear a suit to your interview and you'll succeed at one thing....being that guy.

:)

Ok, had a good 40 minute conversation with Colgan today.

The barebones mins are 1000TT and 100ME.

In my interpretation, they like to see flight time commensurate with experience. 2500 TT with 40ME? Meh, not so much. 2000 TT with 500 ME? Better, BUT again, it depends on the overall picture of the candidate.

Lots of furloughed pilots applying, but that doesn't mean that lower-time pilots don't qualify.

It's the "whole package" and is not a numbers game -- vis a vis a 1200 pilot might get a job whereas a 5000 pilot may not for a variety of reasons.

Even though you have your ATP, you need to pass the ATP written. Having an ATP does not mean that you're more sought-after than another more 'well-rounded' candidate without an ATP.

Just took a delivery of a newer generation Q400 which is generating a need for more pilots, flight attendants and mechanics.

I think that is perfect approach to hire someone.

Thanks for the info. I have a couple of suits sitting around, but when I was hired at my last job, they did NOT want to see a suit. I just like to ask before I go. :)

Good plan! Completely understand different dress codes for different shows. Good luck in the interview! :)

Now what he needs to realize is that if he gets hired it is absolutely crucial that he wears a three piece suit to the first day of Indoc. Contact AMorris for more details.
