Mullicoupe

Every once in a while I feel the need to display a real airplane. Radial, Taildragger, no BRS, etc. Todays entre? The Mullicoupe. Possible the ultimate airplane. I will feature a picture of the "third" Mullicoupe built, although it is less when know than the Black and red one, or the red and black one. So here was the third of the trio of Mullicoupes built. Also exciting is that a fourth (and sadly probably the last) Mullicoupe is being built and it will have a bigger blower and better high altitude cruise.

Is that a Kitfox? It's pretty, but that Mullicoupe has an R-985. Cruise climb is 160MPH at 1800FPM on a hot, humid day. Best cruise is 225 at 11,000 ft on 22GPH.

To make you even more jealous Waco, I've got a lil bit of time in a Mr. Mulligan replica. :)

Can't figure out how to post a pic from my phone, but just search for Bruce Dickenson and Mr. Mulligan and you'll find it. It's out of SZP.

That's exactly what it is. It looks like it's sporting a Rotec R2800. Very cool, but not remotely a Mullicoupe.

Haha, thats what the eye roll was for. Mullicoupes are so awesome, and I saw that Kitfox coming in to land thinking it was one from a far.

I think that is not so much a Mulligan replica, as a natural extension of what the Howard commercial airplanes COULD have been - had they designed the airplanes around the R-1340. I've seen pictures of that airplane (before paint though) and haven't seen much since. I'm sure that Bruce Dickenson made a really neat airplane though. My grandpa was friends with his Dad but I never got to meet any of them. I'd be particularly interested in knowing more about that airplane. The first non-racing Howard was the Mr. Flannigan (DGA-7) and had a Wright I think (350hp) and then the DGA-8,9, 11, 12 came about - with the DGA-11 being the most sought after (it had a 450 P&W). Then Benny Howard sold the company and the DGA-15 was developed - which was a substantial step-down in many ways from the earlier airplanes. I like was Dickenson did with his creation - my imagination would say it kept all of the "good" stuff about the earlier Howards, kept none of the atrocious stuff of the DGA-15, and then put the big 1340 on it. I'm not sure why Benny didn't create his airplanes around the bigger Pratt to begin with and screwed around with the smaller Wrights, Jabobs, and the 985 Pratt? My guess would be the cost of the motor as it would have driven the cost of these airplanes even higher (and they were already high - I think around $25,000+ in the late 30's). What was Dickenson's airplane like? How did it compare to other Howards?

Don't get me wrong though - I'd take that Kitfox in a heart-beat. Has all the necessary things - tailwheel, radial, etc. Certainly it isn't a Mullicoupe, but I bet it's a hell of a lot more airplane than any of the comparable (size/hp) machines like a Rearwin or even the early Monocoupes (the Lambert powered ones, or the little Warner powered ones). I like that Kitfox fine, and I'd have it. But yeah, not a Mullicoupe.

I was there for the first flight. What an awsome airplane. But it's not really a Mulligan replica. It's a scratch built, own desgine with his own twists to it. I can remember when he had an engine fire, and one of CP Aviations instructors ran up with a fire extingusher and put it out, filling the intake tubes with the powder in the extinguisher. Bruce is a real nice guy. Real funny too. He and my boy sat at the resturant one day playing with his airplane toys making airplane aounds and doing loops and rolls, crash landing for about two hours. I miss working at SZP. Soo many nice people there.

Oh...and I think you guys at SZP that have been around the airplane but haven't taken pictures - up close and personal pictures - to post here so I could see them suck big ones. And will continue to suck big ones until you DO post them. Just sayin.

Compare that fuel burn to the typical 172 lycoming 4 cylinder and you gotta ask yourself, why? Why waste time on a cessna 172?

Why are we training people how not to fly?

Why do we put out pilots who are afraid of wind?

When I hit the lotto, I am with you Waco. Start a flight school of tail-draggers and radials.

You happen to know which model that is? I'd love to have a model 7 sometime. Roughly 800 pounds of useful load for a 2 place is awesome. Granted, I'd build it with the Rotax, but still, its a cool looking airplane.

It looks like a Model 7 to me. Here's some more info on that particular airplane.

are kitfoxes rated for aerobatics? Tail + radial + acro = FTW.
