Can you fly IFR in class Golf?

Flying inside the TFRs
Not sure why I need to know this, but it's on a gouge sheet for an interview and I can't find the answer anywhere...

It's just a non radar environment right?

A lot of times it is still a Radar Environment. Typically (here in WY where Golf goes up to 14,500) I get " N1234 upon reaching controlled airspace cleared to K### as filed etc etc"

When enroute and encountering Golf "sometimes" ATC will say that Im out of their control and up to resume my clearance upon reaching controlled airspace". Some controllers wont do anything different for class G then they do E.

That is a common misconception, or the inverse of that is. There are many places out here in Iowa and Nebraska that you are out of that radar environment even though you are a couple thousand feet in the air and in E Airspace.

Yes and when you do don't forget about compulsory reporting points. Those become mandatory when outside the range of radar....

Outside the range of radar doesn't mean Class G, you could be IFR in class Golf and not talking to literally anyone.

No. Radar coverage is radar coverage and airspace is airspace.

No radar means the controllers can't see you. There is plenty of controlled airspace where there is no radar contact. And approaches where you need to do the full approaches because it's below radar contact while still in controlled airspace.

Class G means the airspace is uncontrolled - that ATC doesn't have the responsibility to provide services not the authority to control what you do. The IFR rules in Part 91 are filled with the difference. Look at the difference between rules that say "under IFR" and "in controlled airspace under IFR."

Without even getting into the entire flight in Class G, think about it: You are departing IFR from a non-towered airport where Class E starts at 1000 or 700 AGL. How could you legally get off the ground if you could not fly IFR in Class G?

This is a topic I have had trouble understanding for a while. If you can legally fly in IMC (weather below VFR weather mins for that airspace) in class G airspace without an ATC clearance, then why does class G airspace have VFR weather mins to begin with? Or am I just not understanding it correctly...?

You still need an instrument rating to fly in conditions below VFR minimums, no matter what the airspace.

I am on the same page as you.

Just to make sure I understand:
To fly in conditions below VFR minimums in class G, only an instrument rating is needed, but not an ATC clearance because ATC does not control aircraft in class G. An ATC clearance is needed to fly in conditions below VFR minumums only when in controlled airspace. Is that correct?

correct. Thats why when departing IFR from a class G surface area, your clearance will begin with "Upon entering controlled airspace cleared to..." If youre part 91, you may fly in IMC prior to entering the controlled airspace!
