So what happens if a Polar route flight has to ditch?

This job would be easier without all the airplanes
Let's say a 777 flying about 80nm from the north pole goes "air transat" and loses all power, I'm curious if everyone survived the ditching, who's gonna go get em?

Canada doesn't have artic search and rescue teams? If not them, then either the US or Russian teams.

They'll send a submarine

My point is this:

What is going to be able to get there to land? To the best of my knowledge our helos which are brand new are not able to mid-air refuel, I could be wrong.

Our C-130J's could sure drop supplies, but how do you actually extract people that are on miles of miles of ice in the middle of winter... that being said, survival would be short anyway...

What exactly is in an artic rescue team?

We can access and rescue people pretty far north, Canada operates the northernmost military base on the planet... but even still, it's too far for any helo I know of, unless you get air refuel, and perfect conditions.

I know it's odd to think about it, but the mind wanders working around 0430...

Have the passengers, while surviving on baby seals, clear some snow from the ice so a C-130 can land?
