I'm currently a PPL, with a future someday to fly for a living. I'm going in the Air National Guard...just completed MEPs doing all the medical tests and all. My vision is fine, but my depth perception wasn't 100%. The Air Force has their own grading system so i have no way to compare...i was -B if anyone is familiar with it. For a class 1 medical, what is the regs on this?
 
Did you do the test with the circles, one of which is supposed to pop out at you? That's the only one I've done (for the AF), I'll have to go through my physical paperwork and see if they gave me a grade or not.

I have heard of people missing one or two and then taking it again and doing fine.
 
The FAA standard is less than 6 diopters. If there is more phobia than 6 diopters, they may ask for either an ophthalmology evaluation or a medical flight test. Usually they ask for nothing.
 
for the FAA, I had to give them the opthamology test form. Once they got that and the deferral from my first AME visit, It took about six months to finish the process and I came out with a 100% clean with no limitations, no SODA or waivers for a FIRST class medical.
 
Yeah...it was just a weird test! I didn't really understand it fully....but it's the miltary....hurry up and wait. So i did best i could on the fly. Not to worried though!

They do. At least around here in OK. It seems like a good majority of people fail the circle test. I'm not sure if it's the old machines they use or the overly "wonderful" people administering the test. They didn't like my depth perception, but it didn't matter too much, I'm a Crew Chief...

400 civilian hours later and I haven't crashed yet. Seems like my depth perception works good enough for me. :cool:
 
I had to go back and do it again when I was going in. They put us in this room (go figure there were a bunch of people) and gave us a clear plastic block with three circles in it, not unlike the machine test. We played with our blocks like a bunch of 1-year-olds for a few minutes and the tech came back in and asked each of us which circle we were picking. I said something like "Well they are all REALLY CLOSE, but if I were to pick one, I'd pick this one (pointing). Did I pass?" Tech "(Hmmm I think we're not DQ'ing you at this point)." Me "Well...what does that mean?" Tech "(You're not DQ'd)." Me "(I think I'm relieved...or something)."
