Well so much for wallace state flight school.

Well I went to wallace state the other day and they decided now (after a month of paperwork and preparation) that i do not qualify for student loans due to my previous student loans. I think it had something to do with the fact that i had so much in such a short amount of time. So my student loans will be coming in and i'm just now finding out that private loans cannot be deferred unless I go back to school. I blame myself for this because ITT Tech does all the financial aid so i never even spoke to the loan company until now. ITT failed to disclose a lot about my financial aid and i guess i never knew to ask those kinds of questions. Now my student loans are going to go into default because they want $500+ a month and I just can't afford it.

SO long story short i'm going to have to explore other avenues to get flight training down the road.

On the up side I just got a job working on the flight line at a local airport making enough money to pay some of my bills until I can find a 2nd job. It's hard work but it does get me around aircraft and pilots and i really enjoy it. I've worked 2 days and already i've met bradley byrne who is running for governor of alabama and from what i understand craig fuller's jet is on the ramp right now awaiting departure.

They have a flight school at the FBO so i'm hoping maybe I can work out a deal with the flight instructor or one of the aircraft owers at the field or something.

I'm a bit disappointed that I couldnt start flight training but i guess it was kind of expected when i've got that much in student loans. Just wish i had got something for it...

Not to be harsh, but you went to a school without regional accreditation(aka degree isn't honored anywhere) that charges crazy high tuition. Red flags should have gone up when researching this place not after you're done.

Yeah I was stupid to not research it but I was 18 and dumb and got dragged in by the stupid stories the recruiter told me. By the time i realized there was a difference between regional and national accreditation i was a work/study there and was kinda stuck there til i found another job. I still didn't have a job when I quit but they treated the work/studies like crap and they cut my hours down to 15 a week so i just quit. Best decision I ever made. I mean the 2 year degree wasn't that bad. They didn't teach us anything about the industry of graphic design and they didn't deliver some of the training we needed to work on a professional level. I mean really who can learn photoshop and be on a professional level in 12 weeks?

I was close to finishing my 2 year degree when i knew i wanted out but i let people talk me into staying to finish it and to work. After a few quarters of the 4 year degree though I decided it was time i made my own choices and quit on the spot.

Not saying this isn't my own fault but I do lay some blame on ITT for taking advantage of younger kids lack of knowledge about colleges.

I just want to do my best in putting ITT behind me and start a flying career

P.S. When i really knew i was in trouble is when the Navy didn't even want my 4 year degree...

That is quite an ignorant statement I'd say considering the crappy economy has enabled the military to be more selective due to the glut of unemployed people trying to sign up... and you feel like they should've jumped over an ITT degree? And doesn't the Navy pride itself on officers being top notch? ITT isn't top notch when you have officer candidates coming from prestigious schools.

Don't get worked about the past. We all make mistakes. Trust me, I more than made my share. I am looking at one right now (another medical bill due to a mistake I made in not putting the proper value on self insuring myself... and I am nowhere near 18 or 19 years old!).

The good news is you got a job you enjoy and it is in aviation. So stick with it. I also bet if you are genuine in your work and interest in aviation, people will help you along the way. Also, go talk to that flight school. They may not help as much as you hope, but I am sure they can help you figure out a way to slowly work toward your dreams. Plus, the second job is a great idea if you are able to take one on that is flexible and understands you may need some time off on occasion due to your primary job (which could be if they need you for overtime on the ramp or if you just start feeling too tired since that can be dangerous).

Good luck to you. At least you are on your way. And yes. Those ITT people can be real bastards. You are not the first one that happened too. And in the long term, go get yourself another degree (once you are working as a pilot... focus on your flight rating first at this point given your situation). I suggest an online program to do the Bachelor degree once you work full time as a pilot. Just make sure it's accredited!

if you can't afford the loans you have now, it sounds like they did you a favor not allowing you to increase the balance due.

don't let that discourage you. pay down your current loans, and pay as you go for flight training.

It has more to do with the fact that since ITT is not accredited, the Navy will not accept a degree from them as required to become an officer. I know they're not exactly recruiting, but the non-accreditation doesn't even let the door open.

i was more trying to state that they didnt even want me to apply with the ITT degree. I wasn't trying to make it sound like the Navy should have jumped on it so sorry if it came across like that

It is probably a blessing in disguise. Do you at least have real IT certs?

Nope. Working as a work/study didnt pay enough for me to get them. Now that i'm working I may go and get some depending on where this job at the airport takes me.

Fun off topic fact: They have an authentic P-51 stored at the airport where I work that i will eventually need to fuel... it has a jump seat. Wouldnt mind begging for a ride in that thing...
