Phaseout is set for Colgan Air name

Carrier for Flight 3407 part of reorganization

The name Colgan Air, synonymous with the crash of Continental Connection Flight 3407 in Clarence Center, is going away.

No one will comment on when the Colgan name will be phased out, but the airline’s parent, Pinnacle Airlines, confirmed that the name will eventually disappear.

“Over time, our intent is to phase out the Colgan name as we reorganize into two operating airlines,” Pinnacle spokesman Joe Williams said in a statement.

This kind of like going from Valujet to AirTran, same-same?

IMO yes. However, if they fire off everybody from Colgan, including George Casey, then perhaps they (Colgan) could start anew.

I guess I'll just get used to hearing the standard flight training dept phrase of, "You'll learn that on the line," from Ed Yarig all over again. Of course, hearing his verbal crutch of "All righty?" (also used as a statement of agreement/negative/exclamation/regret/yawn/etc) will make the drinking games that much more fun.

You forgot "Don't worry about that. That's a CA question." "You'll learn it on the line" is probably the most common answer to questions that were asked in my initial ground school. Nice to see the Pinnacle way made it over to Colgan.

During management's "safety audit" one of the things that came out was trust issues between labor and management. Yeah, I know you're all shocked, right? Management asked what could be done to repair the damage. Realistically? At this point, replace senior management as we don't trust a word that comes out of their mouths. That would also include management at Pinnacle Corp. Anything less than that, and the trust issues will always be there.

Gee I wonder why the name Colgan is "synonymous with the crash of Continental Connection Flight 3407 in Clarence Center". It couldn't be because of stuff like:
"The pilot flew for Colgan, which operated the aircraft which crashed in Buffalo..."
"Pinnacle Corp owns Colgan, which crashed a plane in Buffalo killing 50 people..."
"The incident happened on board a flight operated by Colgan, the same company which had a crash in New York..."

The media really likes to latch on sometimes, don't they? I don't remember ever reading:
"The plane that diverted was being flown by Comair, which had a crash in Lexington where the pilots took off on the wrong runway...".

I guess this is what happens when the first US fatal accident in 2 years happens.

Every time another pax bill of rights (or whatever) comes out it's, "Caused by Mesaba ground staff leaving an XpressJet plane on the ramp for the overnight."

Perhaps it is because of the negative publicity attached to Colgan Air.

It would seem that after 3407, the media coverage, the Congressional pressure, and even the special reports like "Flying Cheap" have had an impact.

Perhaps Colgan is having a hard time putting new business together given the stigma now attached to the name.

.. and don't forget: Colgan pilot arrested with largest stash of child porn EVER.

I'm surprised it's taken this long. It does, however, demonstrate something important: Given enough pressure, a stigma of poor safety can dictate change. This isn't really the change we want, but it's a start.

It's kind of the reason Pinnacle was remaned Pinnacle when it was spun off. Express I 5719 in hibbing was/is still a skeleton in the closet, but over time they only remember the name.

In this case Mesaba is like "Callahan Brake Pads".... All they want is the name.

Wasn't that crash Airlink/Express II?

From Business Week:
Pinnacle Airline Corp. says it intends to phase out use of the Colgan Air name now that it has purchased another airline.
Colgan, which flies as Continental Connection, United Express and US Airways Express, operated the plane that crashed in Buffalo, N.Y., last year, killing 50 people. Its headquarters are in Manassas, Va.
Pinnacle bought Mesaba Airlines from Delta last week. Pinnacle spokesman Joe Williams said in a statement Thursday that the plan is to reorganize into two airlines, with Pinnacle operating jets and Mesaba operating turboprops.
The phase-out of the Colgan name, reported first by The Buffalo News, won't happen immediately. Williams said Pinnacle will use all three airline names for the foreseeable future.

Speaking about that Steve, lets just say that you might be shocked once the proposals to fix those issues come out through our comittee. We've mentioned several "way out in left field" proposals in passing to several higher ups and we were pleasantly shocked to hear their responses. However, I can't mention specifics...just be patient;)

Republic merged with Northwest Airlines, and Express I entered into a marketing agreement with Northwest Airlines as Northwest Airlirk. The Meridian Trust Company was listed as the registered owner of N334PX with an exclusive lease to Express II Airlines, Inc.

In 1993 Express I was divided into two companies. The airlines were not mutually exclusive and the pilots could bid back and forth between the two as they were covered by the same ALPA contract. The principle operations base for Express II was in Minneapolis.

Because its late and I'm lazy I'm not going to give you an MLA or APA citation, but this is mostly from the NTSB's final report. Same Express, Same shell game, different decade. It's all about the name!

Heh. Not shocked at much that comes out of that committee anymore. I'm flying with a mutual friend that's an FA on your committee. Seems the new guy at Pinnacle Inc is at least open to new ideas.
