I finally got around to sifting through the 200 emails I hadn't read in the last week (due to long 4th of July and sudden family death) and I noticed an email from AOPA. Not sure if this is old news in the forum but...

Remember that AOPA airport directory you would get every year? The large paperback one? Well now if you pre-order it before October something-or-another its only $19.95 (vs. 39.95 for non-members) 19.95 !!! What happended to free and part of my membership dues and magazine subsciprtions???? Also, what pilot with a right mind would buy an airport directoy that isnt legal?

:enter: endless debate about AOPA mailings... :end:

I just found that to be astonishing that all of a sudden these huge paperbacks that already were kinda worthless, now cost 20 bucks :dunno:

In other news, you can get it on your iPhone for free.

I noticed a little while back I haven't gotten one in a long time! But I just downloaded the free AOPA Directory app for my blackberry and that works just as well. Maybe that's why you have to pay for it now..

Now if we could get the message out to those guys at the phone company...

It is my understanding that state regulators are the ones that force the phone companies to keep distributing phone books. It has been years since the last time I used one.

As for the AOPA airport directory, I have it on my phone. For whatever reason I haven't received the print one as part of my membership in the past couple of years, and frankly I didn't miss it.

Thats what I am saying, it was a waste of money in the first place and now I have to pay EXTRA for it?
You don't have to pay for it all. That's kind of the point of what they're doing IMO. If there is one thing I've learned in my travels, its that you should never under estimate the ability of people to find use in useless stuff and you should never under estimate the ability of those people to complain loudly when you take away said useless stuff.

You think it was a useless waste, and I think it was a useless waste. But AOPA understands that if they just eliminate it, they'll piss off a whole bunch of people who looked forward to collecting their useless airport directory book every year. So instead of eliminating it completely, they're giving those people who actually want it for some strange reason a way to still get it. Seems like a win/win to me. And predictably, people (i.e. you) are complaining anyway.

Have you noticed a lot of older men with moustaches trying to look casual around your residence? Either they're the cops or you need to call the cops.

Haha, nice. Recent mailing now says the AOPA airport directory is online, and free for members! ... a $39.99 value

The seat heater option in my vehicle seemed worthless to me in this climate, and the dealer said I would have to pay extra for it. But, for some reason posting that fact on the Internet never occurred to me until now.
