Isn't the 55 an older airplane? :p

I haven't flown the 20 or 30 series airplanes, but from what I've heard, the brakes were pretty good for the weights they had to grind to a halt. I've heard numerous stories of 20 series airplanes being operated on 2,500'-3000' runways at light weights. On the other hand, the 55 is as much as a 21,500 airplane with all the available AMKs. Unfortunately, Gates dropped the ball by not taking the opportunity to improve the undercarriage. Since the 55 was basically an experimental aircraft leading up to the 60, the shortcomings were just passed on. The Longhorn wing was a new design, the cabin volume was greatly increased, the fuel system was simplified, etc etc...they just didn't do anything about the wheels and brakes.

You could have just said you've never flown a "real" Lear.:pirate:
 
In a jet, no.

I did however request a blown tire before V1 in the sim at my Lear 55 training not long after the accident in question. Even that underpowered pig had no problem getting off the ground.

I asked because I have a friend who blew a tire on a 737 on takeoff. I asked him about it and he said, "Ever seen those paint can shakers at Home Depot?" He said the vibration was so bad that he was not sure the airplane was going to fly. Remember to that as one nears V1 on most jets you are accelerating at about 7-10kts/sec so any hesitation near V1 means you will be BEYOND V1.

A number of years ago there was a report named PSM/ICR which stood for Propulsion System Malfunction/Improper Crew Response. It noted that sims for many events do not have any actual data for replication. Engine failures, catastrophic seizures, blown tires. NO HARD DATA so that the sim accurately replicates the failure. If you have a chance, ask your sim instructor how the event is contructed and if it uses ACTUAL data to simulate the condition.

And with this accident there was associated failures so that the airplane thought it was airborne and would not permit certain functions.

Similarly another friend had a JT8D swallow a blade. He too said the sim was not even close to what happened with a catastrophic event. He said he thought the wing was going to come off. Maybe a bit of hyperbole.

This all to say don't discount the training but also don't bank on it to be like the real thing when you get into oddball failures.
 
Its scary enough in the piston single! I had one go on touchdown felt it roll for just a second then BAM! it was everything I could do to keep the thing from going off into the snow drift. Sketch!

Never had a tire blow but on the 727 the ground crew failed to lock the nosegear pin into the scissors and when we landed at CLT, the pin vibrated out. The nosewheel then began a shake that like your event, was one wild ride. I was able to keep it on the runway but another 100-200ft and we would have departed the pavement. It just didn't want to be nice.
