Class 1 EKG question.

Hey Doc,

I was thinking about getting a class 1 done this summer. I am only 19 years old. If I was reading the regs right isn't an EGK only required if I am over 40 years old? My main question is this: If I go to my AME, and he wants me to take an EKG do I have the right to point him out that it isn't necessary? Or does he then have the right to not accept me if I don't want to take the EKG.

It isn't that I believe I have any heart issues and I am trying to get around it. I just wouldn't want to have to take another test that I don't have to take. It may be worth me getting one now though to make sure I don't have some type of condition that would show up when I am 40.

I cannot think of an AME who would do an ECG on a 19 year old airman for no reason.

The first ECG is due at age 35.

Yes, but their nurse might insist, even while you're telling them you don't have to have it, when you're 25.

At least the doc didn't charge me for it. I was still pretty upset.

Yeah, I should have put more along the lines of the nurses not really knowing what all of the regs are. I guess when I call to make my appointment I could make it clear or something so maybe they would know before I even got there.

The nurses insisted I get one when I got my Class 1 a year or so ago. I gave in, and nothing showed up, as expected. The Doc came in and asked "Did they just give you an EKG? They shouldn't have..." Didn't charge me for it or anything...

EDIT: I was 18 at the time...

I was told during my last medical I would require an EKG and I'm 30. At least I'm in the ballpark I guess. Anyone know if there is a typical EKG cost for Airmen Medical Certificates? I did a google search for EKGs but the prices were all over the place.

Good to know it's actually 35. Thanks again Doctor Forred.

Point of order: They're not nurses and calling them such is the same as calling a flight attendant a pilot because they work on an airplane.

As far as cost of your EKG, Beaman in Clearwater is now charging a flat $95 for a first class with EKG.

Either they were nurses, or they were "doctor assistants." The doctor came in after the nurse gave me the EKG, checked vision, hearing, etc.

I hate it when the staff doesn't know the regs. I have had more problems with them not knowing regs or how to do SI's. Everytime I change AME's trying to find a good one since mine retired. Every year I end up regreting not blowing an entire day and jumpseating to/from PHX...

I wish someone would set up an AME rating system online...

In Argentina you must take an EKG test every year for your medical cert (Class I and II). In my case it showed a right bundle blockage. Complementary studies were required for me to obtain my medical. Then I found out I also have a minor problem in one of the valves (cant remember the name). I got my medical cert after I presented the complementary studies. I was 19 at the time.

Now I run a full set of heart studies every year to make sure everything is working ok, I'm concious I cannot be overweight, have to watch what I eat, and cannot be sedentary. I want to fly till I hit 65.

If you wait too long to check on this kinds of things it might be too late for making changes in your life style.
