Grand Forks Job Market

i wouldnt say its so cheap. expect the quality of accommodations to be WAY less than you are used to. in austin tx i was paying 750/mo for a 2/2, brand new apartment, nice appliances, great views, etc.... for the same price in gfk youll get a beat up 2/1 with ragged out carpet, disgusting cabinets, small windows, etc etc

IF you can even find an apartment in grand forks. expect all the apartments to be full, all the time, and dont plan on bringing a pet unless youre okay with them being there against your lease terms... i cant think of ANY apartments in gfk that allowed any pets. by far the most pet unfriendly town ive ever seen.

and for jobs, hope you like working at a fast food place or at the mall. because thats all there is!

There are plenty of, well paying, jobs in GFK. They require you to do some work though. You can drive beet trucks, a few construction testing outfits in town, lots of farms around that need hired hands, UPS and FedEx usually have openings for package sorters, truck loaders, etc.

You will find most apartments don't allow pets simply because most people from out of state can't handle -10 F and won't excercise their pets, so the pets in turn destroy the apartments. A lot of the smaller complexes are family owned and the landlords are good people, there are exceptions to all rules.

Apartments in East Grand Forks tend to be a little bit nicer, ie bigger. If you end up going to UND, check out the apartments right behind Rydell Chevrolet, nice 2 bedroom, 1 bath. There are also some nice 1 bedroom, 1 bath apartments just off of Columbia Road and Demers Ave intersection, no garages though, makes for a cold winter.

If you like having to come in for a couple hours at 6am and then a couple more hours at 6pm on Saturday/Sunday, dumbest work schedule I have ever seen. If I cannot work a solid shift somewhere it is not worth my time, because that schedule pretty much destroys a persons entire day.

Farms are pretty much decommissioned when it is -20 season, and who on earth would subject themselves to summer in ND? I sure would never do it again.

Ughh, Thank friggin goodness I am done with that cesspool, I went home and got a decent paying full time job with only turning in one job application. Perhaps now I will finally be able to realize my dreams, one thing that proved impossible at UND. :bandit:

Think of it this way; the living situation in Grand Forks is about as glamorous as the town ;)

There are lots of places hiring just gotta look out for them, I saw walmart was hiring  or perhaps hold a job as a campus bus driver. Some students who walk along or across university makes me want to run them over...stupid tools some of them.

You left UND on your own volition, or mommy and daddy stopped paying the bills? cause its starting to sound more and more the latter...

Yep, you got me. I am 21 years old and needed mommy and daddy to tell me what was best for me. :sarcasm:

Like I have stated numerous times before it is my opinion that UND is a pilot mill and was not the right fit for me. It is great you and SOME other people like it. I did not like it and it is not like I am a lone warrior on this topic. Towards me personally, UND faculty proved through their actions that they care more about bureaucracy then helping a person achieve their dreams, and that is not something I am willing to pay for. My EFC=0 btw, and everything is all up to me here.

Really though, all that matters is that I have passion for flying that will never die; just like many of you. :bandit:

Me and a buddy of mine (who is on the forums btw) shared an apartment for $500 (split two ways) with 2 bedrooms and one bath. So at the time I was paying 20/month in car insurance, 40 a month in utilities, 250 in rent, a bit on food and gas (which was about 2.00-2.50 gallon at the time) and the rent of the quarters were divided up between beer money and keeping my clothes somewhat clean... Ahh the memories...

This was in like 2005-2006 or so, but I can't imagine its that much more expensive now!

You also have no life or ability to let things go without shoving your views down the rest of this forum's throat... unlike many of us.

Like I have said multiple times before, it works okay for some people but it did not for me. I think you are just offended by my personal thoughts about UND. But, I do not care, I am glad you had a good 4 or 5 years there!

But, when given the chance I will steer people away from there because I do not think the faculty cares enough about normal students.

I think I said this before........Welcome to a university. It doesn't matter the university, none of them care about you unless you give them a bad name. There are just too many students

Guys come on. Nobody is going to change this kids mind. If we dont respond to him, he wil fade off into history. Cue Challenger to call me a cheerleader. Cue TxAviator and his "Crew" to rip the club scene/job market/weather/restraunts/apartments/city water quality/anything else you can think of in GF. 3.....2.....1.....GO!

Cheerleader! The Bars that I went to sucked ass, I can handle the weather just not the drab ugliness, Pizza places sure sucked in Grand Forks, among all the other terrible restaurants and being originally from Duluth; the water does suck in Grand Forks (just like how it does in almost any place other then Duluth).

As far as I can see, everything you stated that we bicker about is true so why should it matter?

Like I said even if the case, I would rather not have to live in Grand Forks, knowing what I know now. But, it would not hurt for one or two faculty members to steep up to the plate and be away from the "norm".

Also, I discovered very fast that I would rather fly at an FBO where they know me by my first name the second I walk in the door.

and plain and simple it was not just UND Aerospace's BS that caused my disdain, UND was not a fun campus for me to be at. People never really seemed to be out there doing things around campus and they were very clicky.

It's just ND..its a fact of life here, its a weird state...did you hear about that family from Florida that moved to south central ND? They moved here to make good on our state governments promise of cheap land and a job. The whole process went by smoothly without a problem. ND made good on its promise on the government side but what didnt go so well was with the residents. They made the family feel isolated like they didnt belong there. So a couple years later they moved back to Florida. ND likes to complain a lot bla blah but can you blame then, not a lot to do but fun to pick fights with. :rotfl:

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Not Only do I agree with that post, but your new Avatar is cracking me up now too! :D:beer:

I didn't like North Dakota much either, way to cold. But the people are friendly and thats what counts. I could sit here and bash the out of it too, but then again no one kidnapped me, put me in a box, and made me live there. I chose to live there so it would be kind of stupid for me to just bash it like it was a prison or something.

Plus name another flight school of equal or better quality at the same price? I was living in the dorms and going there full time and flying for under 30K per year when I was there. Can't beat that!
