Miami Aviation School Gets Its Own Jet

An aviation school in Miami is now the only one in the country to have its very own commercial jet. But getting the 39-ton plane to the school from Miami International Airport wasn't easy.

Uhh.. SJSU and Purdue both have Boeing 727's donated by United in 1990... although SJSU's is going to the fire department in a month or so :(.


Cool story about the move though.
 
Cool stuff. But SIU has a 732 from United, I don't know where they got the "the only one in the country to have its very own commercial jet" line.
 
C'mon guys... why are you so reluctant to be excited and see the cool/fun factor in this? This isn't something that happens everyday.

I realize there are retired birds all over the place... the cool thing about this one is that it was donated to a High School. That's why they are the "only one in the country".

George T. Baker is a Vocational/Technical High School that is a part of the Miami-Dade Public School System.

Don't remember my school district getting anything this cool. ;)
 
Usually the 727s were donated for the university FE programs. What will they be doing with an MD80, other than playing pilot in the cockpit? Someone needs to be ATC though.:D
 
I'd LOVE for Delta to donate a mothballed 747-200 to my former high school!

Then the students of Tulare Union High School would know that there's more in their future than being farmers, people that work on farms, bombastic politicians or lowering their cars. :)

It'd make for plenty of shade in the "quad" area, additional classroom space and they could paint a large "Redskin" mascot on the side for a little extra school spirit.

This is a way cool thing to do.

The other cool donation was a SPIRIT Airlines DC-9 that was "donated" to WANNADO CITY! It's parked in the Sawgrass Mall in Sunrise, FL

No doubt, it is cool to have an airplane like that one in a school, and exposure to its systems, although not necessary, it will be good for the students.

Most likely it will become a money pit for the school in the future. Aircraft components will be "studianized", parts will break etc. and they aren't cheap. They will need a hangar $$$$$$$$, because if they leave it outside it will become a corrosion bucket, and they won't be able to run enough "Material and Processes" classes to keep the aircraft clean of rust (Miami right?...salty air, lots of rain)
If they actually build a hangar, then all that money could have been used for so many other cool stuff for the school, that would have been much better learning tools for the studs.

I couldn't but roll my eyes when the reporter said that they were going from "this" (small twin) to "that" (big one) :rolleyes:

If I'm doing a project for school, I rather work in a small aircraft (easier to find info, simpler systems/diagrams) than a more complex one (huge maintenance manual, AD's, Service Bulletins, etc. etc.)

And at the end, no matter what school you went, or how much you paid; it is the same PTS for everyone.

Bottom line, don't believe the hype and SNJS is not just for pilots.

Turboprops rule!! :rawk:
