CNN) -- A mechanic standing near a Boeing 737 at El Paso International Airport in Texas was sucked into one of the engines and killed Monday, officials said.

Continental Airlines Flight 1515 was preparing to take off for Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston when "a maintenance-related engine run-up of the right-hand engine" was carried out, said Roland Herwig, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration's southwest region in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

"Someone on the ground was sucked into the engine," he said.

In a written statement, Continental Chairman and CEO Larry Kellner said the person killed was a mechanic who worked for one of the airline's suppliers.

"My fellow coworkers and I extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of the mechanic involved in this tragic event," Kellner said.

The 737-500 was carrying 114 passengers and five crew members at the time of the accident, he said.

"Continental is coordinating assistance for passengers who need help dealing with this tragedy," Kellner said. "Continental's Employee Assistance Program team is also flying to El Paso to meet with employees."

He said the incident occurred during a maintenance check in preparation for the plane's departure.

A spokeswoman for Boeing said Monday's incident is not the first such accident. "It doesn't happen very often," spokeswoman Liz Verdier said. "It has happened in the past."

Re: COA Mechanic Sucked into engine...

Wow, so it's a 5 year-old story?

Sadly, things like this do happen. My dad saw at least 1 person get chopped by props overseas at Ubon... An AA ramper walked into the spining prop arc of an ATR on the ORD ramp in the mid-90s (very messy, and in full view of pax).

Re: COA Mechanic Sucked into engine...

Is this new?

In Jan 2006, a mech was killed , same plane, same flight number, same Monday:

What... you guys dont believe the same thing can happen to the same plane, in the same plane at different times?... makes me remember of those Ice pilot videos... The same thing ended up happening to the same pilot in the same plane over and over and would end up stuck in the same place for a while all the time....
yeah ....bad example :)

And yes....This is no ¨¨Fresh News¨¨
I got the note from a spanish forum today and everybody was shocked to know about the news... as if it had just happened today ... Turns out the guy got the news from a place that posts news that have happened ¨¨Today -Years ago¨¨ (Aka: On a monday like today, but of 2006...)

Ugh, stuff like that makes me cringe. It's always in the back of my mind working the EMB 170/190s. That and hearing the stories about people walking into propellers (the common theme seemed to be going after a hat or something that blew away without thinking first)

Maybe that forum will have a breaking story about AZ's new immigration law in their June 2015 edition.

I can't even imagine what those who saw it must still go through. I've seen the photos from after it happened and it's pretty horrific.

Had a new fed check-chucker walk back towards the prop once in mdw. Shut it down but there's no way it would have been fast enough. Luckily one of the other dudes buttonholed him. Absolutely terrifying sitting there waiting to hear the 'thunk'. Gave me nightmares for a week...and nothing even happened. How you miss a Garrett at idle I don't know. Probably new job jitters.

I was at ATL one evening back in high school, so this would have been in the 97-2000 time frame, and witnessed a ramper drive or walk (can't remember which) into the prop of an ASA EMB-120. The way the aircraft was facing, it splattered blood on the windows of Concourse C...it was quite possibly the worst thing I've ever been witness to.

Were you there as a passenger? That's horrible man.

I was there picking someone up, this was Pre-9/11 and I could still go hangout at the airport for hours before whomever showed up.

I used to run a service taking people to the airport back in the day, alot of elderly people in our area hated driving through ATL, so I it for them.

Needless to say, I didn't sleep well for a few weeks.

PDT took apart a ramper in DCA about 8 years ago. Apparently the FA was looking out the window at the prop right as it happened. The story goes that they were picking up pieces of bone off the ramp for months afterward.

Ramps are VERY dangerous places.

Yes EXTREMELY dangerous. Complacency really kills there. I was witness to a buddy of mine almost going into a prop one day...
