How many commercial tickets?

So by reading the recent article 'Losing it's Luster' it got me to some thinking. How many commercial pilot licenses were issued in 2009? How do I look this information up?

Well, we can swing this topic another way and pose the question to CFI's as to the number of commercial students we've had and that kind of trend. Personally, I had 5 commercial students pass their checkrides from August 2008 to August 2009. From August 2009 to present, I have had 1 commercial student take a couple lessons in the Arrow, period. Nobody even inquires anymore about flying commercially for a living. And that is strange because we live at the UPS world headquarters and generally get a bunch of high school kids dreaming. Not anymore.

Why? Are you finally thinking about getting yours?

Yeah, being a commercial pilot has always been a dream of mine blee. I just want to see how much competition I'll have

Yeah well, I was wondering if there was a concrete factual number for brand new commercial certificates printed every year. I've heard from some people that in 2008 it was only around 80 for the whole country. Seems ridiculously low but considering the state of the industry, it's quite possible.

ATP alone probably got 80 people done in 2008. I know its been lower then in past years, but the 2008 number were 10595.

For me personally, I've only signed off one commercial student since I've been instructing. That being said my flight school mostly does private individuals just wanting to learn how to fly for fun, not for a career.

Right now I think there are around 6,000 certificated pilots with a great deal of flight time looking for work. So, you (and I) will have a great deal of competition for quite some time.
