Flight Instructor updates

We shall be hiring August 8th and 9th. If you want to apply, please keep checking http://crewlink.aero.und.edu . I doubt it will be a whole lot, but it is better than nothing. Application normally opens about 2 months ahead. There is two days of interviews and a sim ride. You will know at the end of the 9th if you're hired. You would then be required to stay the next week for training.

We got a pay raise tonight. Effective immediately:
Part Time: 12/hr
Full Time CFI: 15/hr
Full Time CFII: 18/hr
Full Time MEI: 20.50/hr
Full Time I-CFI: 24.70/hr

Also, end of year bonus for student contact time. You'll find out about this if you work here. Basically a nice extra pay for working hard throughout the year and paid first pay period of January.

Last, but the biggest thing of the night. All Full Time Flight Instructors are now eligible for a free 1 credit co-op. Which means you are classified as a employee and full time student. Entitling you to:
Defer Student Loans
Use Student Health (free)
Student Wellness Center
Student Housing
Student Parking

etc etc

So, very busy night. In summary, we're hiring, and while we didn't get everything we wanted, things are improving.

what else was wanted? And the bonus is paid end of jan or mid feb. And no elidigble for co-op, you will be put in a co-op, I don't think you can opt out or have any choice if full time. New pay rates are effective July 1.

you should pay better attention

Salary options for those here longer than a year or two. Dental and vision. You know, the same that we would get if we worked part time on campus. I probably did miss the effective date. Still better than nothing. As far as the co-op, you would have to sign up, so of course it's optional. Is it worth it? Yes, since if I have to pay my student loans that's over $1000 a month. Would it be better to have a raise of $1000/mo, yes, but I'll take what I can get. In the meantime it allows me to continue working, not live in poverty, and wait for a job that actually pays for my skills.

forgot the :sarcasm: for the last line :)

Oh, and you forgot to check your spelling.

Blip16, I'm calling you out.

I know things aren't great, but could you maybe be, you know, courteous and nice to others online? I keep finding you with sarcasm or downplaying posts. This is still a networking and news forum right? I doubt you talk to your students like you do online.

I'm happy to hear that UND will be hiring, but that CFI payscale still blows! It hasn't changed very much over the past 4-5 years.

That blows? Really? How many hours does a typical UND instructor bill in a month?

The discrimination against CFIs as far as benefits is just downright degrading though. I mean if the rest of the University has them as an option for part time, WHY would the CFIs not get them?

We are still "Temporary" employees. Its due to when the industry is good, they hire every 1 - 5 months. If they're permanent, then you can keep your benefits for a year after if you pay for them. They don't want that cost. It sucks, but I've heard a few times now that CFI's are a dime a dozen.

They won't fire a CFI unless they really really really mess up, but if you leave, eh, whatever. They have others lining up. Just sucks for those of us that have been here for years.

Bill between 50-200 a month. Max is 200 due to policy. So it can be very good or very bad. I did have 2 months last year where I didn't have any of my own students, just coverage.

How many months a year do UND instructors work?

I hate to do it, but I definitely agree with this. Instructors at UND are paid well below what they should be. You can go work at any mom-n-pop FBO and get paid $20/hour for a regular CFI, even at the crappy ones. Freelance will net you $35+ hour.

Really, the only advantage UND has with regards to students is that you don't have to find your own. Even so, I have friends who should have and want 6-8 students, but have 2. I've also never believed that whole "well, you get paid contact time" arguement either. You get the same anywhere else, too.

how about the fact that we don't have health insurance premiums to pay? depending on your situation that is anywhere from 3,000-6,000/yr. or more. find me a mom-n-pop that pays your health insurance (full family coverage)

there is more to a paycheck that just the final dollar amount......(not disagreeing that a higher final dollar would be sweet) but i am not going to complain because overall it is pretty good. and i have been in the same situation as your friend, so know how it goes. i have been a cfi a few different places and by far UND is the best one to work for.

If that is true then I cannot say how happy I am that I am leaving UND after this semester, to pursue flying at a place that is more affordable. . . I flew with 3 guys this semester out of my short time flying at UND, 2 were okay and I could have seen myself finishing with my PPL with them if I had the money at the time; But one was terrible and I would not ever waste money on flying with him again, nor did I really feel safe flying with him because of his inability to communicate that I was not doing something right.

Really, the only advantage UND has with regards to students is that you don't have to find your own.

Certain students such as myself would consider that to not be a good thing. I think I am intelligent enough to find an instructor that is compatible with me, that way I feel I will learn more and become a better pilot.

I honestly do not think it is that bad. Sure, a higher pay would be nice. But as has already been stated, we don't pay health insurance and so forth. I flew with a freelance instructor and paid him $40/hr. He was paying his own insurance I'm sure, unless he was covered by a spouse's plan and that makes a difference. With the full-time student benefits we are now offered, I think UND instructor's are compensated on a descent level, though I wish 100 hours a month was a bad month for me, but it's actually a really good month here.

There is no reason for UND to raise the CFI pay, they have an unlimited supply of CFIs that want flight time. The biggest slap in the face is the part-time pay, just because you are part-time doesn't mean you should get paid less. Heck, I remember when part-timers got $9/hr. That's criminal!

ERAUs CFI pays scale isn't any better, because they also have an unlimited supply of CFIs.

sad.

Wow I sure hope that isn't the case. If there are so many instructors waiting to get in .. why would they want to hang on to someone who could be a huge liability further down the line? I know some of my friends who were hired, past and present, and I also know some that sure as heck shouldn't be teaching anyone to fly ..ever. I would hope that if they messed up they sure as heck wouldn't still have a job. Not in such a critical training enviroment. Our jobs as CFI are to ensure safety .. so if what you say is truly correct (which I think it is) where does flight ops draw the line to say what messed up vs really really messed up is ??
