Redbull Air Races

Ain't nobody got time for that
Hey y'all

The air races start tomorrow in Abu Dhabi.

I was wondering if anyone knows the channel they will be on?

I have DirecTV and local cable if it helps?

it's all good. no rush, I just want to set my dvr to record it when it airs. do they really wait until the end? dammit.

who televises it while it runs?

I think it starts running on Fox Sports sometime in the summer.

I'm bummed there's no SD round this year.

Man I went to these in SD a couple years ago. It was freakin awesome. So much fun, and really cheap to get tickets to.

I don't get why they don't get broadcast here, when we have races here in the US.

Kind of on the same topic, anyone here going to the NYC race in June? i just went to the site and tickets STILL aren't on sale.

Yeah we're pretty much hosed for any non-NASCAR racing in the US. Pathetic.

The part about that that really bothers me is that indycar or Formula 1 is where the real skilled driving is involved. Nascar has skill, but it's much different. It's all about drafts and timing whereas other car races as I mentioned are more about acceleration, cornering skill and tire/fuel strategy.

Agreed, F1 is simply incredible to experience in person. My dad & I used to go up to Montreal in the 80s. Nothing like seeing a car come up on you at 160+, brake down to 40, then accelerate up to 190.
The stuff I really enjoy are rallying (talk about skill, 100+mph at night on a snow covered dirt road) and the production based road racing like world challenge and all the Aussie/Euro touring car series. Those are really what NASCAR started off as before it morphed into the goofy marketing $$$$$$$$$ driven tube framed funny car thing that it is now. Also AMA racing before the NASCAR idiots bought it out and destroyed it was great.
The real Speedvision was a great channel, it had cars, bikes, boats, aircraft, including a few EAA shows, but apparently NASCAR talk shows and infomercials make more of the almighty dollar. Sad.

You nailed it so well I couldn't be more satisfied. I used to LOVE speedvision. and I love watching Rally car racing, it's so exciting to see these cars drifting around corners in dirt/ice/snow at 80 miles an hour with nothing but ditches or trees on the side of the road

Yeah my girlfriend and I take the Six every year to Detroit from Minnesota. Its awesome! Dont worry about the tickets, they dont go on sale till closer to the event. The VIP stuff is on sale now.

If anyone else is going to Detroit this year, we should hook up! We will be staying at the Detroit Mariott at the Renaissance Center.

Went to the air races for the qualifiers today in Abu Dhabi with Typhoonpilot. Awesome time. No cost for any tickets, just put out some lounge chairs on the beach and enjoyed the show. Looks like Britain has a really strong chance this year along with the Austrian. Would be nice to see the Americans clean it up though. :)

Good time sitting on the beach watching the preliminary heats. Was a bit hot though and the umbrellas kept wanting to fly away. I think Abu Dhabi is probably one of the better venues since it's free and the beach setting makes for a nice place to camp out with a cooler full of drinks and enjoy the action. Saw a lot of cut pylons over the day and one pretty shaky rookie pilot who kep pulling off the course in his attempts ( still he must be good to even be invited to the show ).

Of course I was rooting for the Americans like fsiflyer, with Mike Goulian being my top choice. Here is how it turned out today:

Defending champion Paul Bonhomme of Britain won the first Red Bull Air Race of the 2010 season in Abu Dhabi on Saturday with a hard-fought victory in scorching heat, finishing just ahead of compatriot Nigel Lamb (2nd) and Hungary’s Peter Besenyei (3rd) in an eventful battle on the Arabian Gulf. Austria’s Hannes Arch finished a disappointing 11th after posting the fastest Qualifying time on Friday.

Arch, who had won the Abu Dhabi season opener last year and was the favourite going in after winning the one Qualifying point on Friday, was disqualified in the Top 12 round for dangerous flying, his first and only flight. Many other front-runners were also knocked out early on a day of upsets due to disqualifications or technical malfunctions. With temperatures rising above 40 degrees and the strong desert winds suddenly shifting direction just hours before the race, the 2010 season opener over the Arabian Gulf turned into one of the most challenging races in the six-year history of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship.
Michael Goulian took a strong fourth place but the American’s day nevertheless ended in disappointment as well when he was unable to fly in the final round of four due to technical problems. Canada’s Pete McLeod, a rookie last year, got a career-best fifth place. Australia’s Matt Hall was flying well and poised for a spot on the podium but was also forced to retire ahead of the Super 8 round with a technical problem that dropped him to eighth place.

“It’s a great start to the new year,” said Bonhomme, who took 12 points for his 12th career victory – and fourth in the last five races going back to last season. Bonhomme, like fellow veterans Lamb and Besenyei, was a master of the difficult weather conditions and managed to stay calm despite some extraordinary pressure.

“It’s fascinating what we’ve seen today. The wind changes direction and it sorts everyone out. The temperature was also a factor. To keep your concentration up in these conditions is quite a task. I don’t think it’s a coincidence (that the race’s most experienced pilots were on the podium). Experience helps on days like today. You have to keep an eye on what happens and play the tactics just right.”

Lamb and Besenyei, who had both struggled somewhat in fair weather training earlier in the week, also rose to the occasion of the heat and treacherous winds, full of sand as they gusted out of the desert.
“Today was a day of race tactics and strategy,” said Lamb, adding he hoped to make a habit of getting on the podium after taking an identical second place in Barcelona. “It would be a great habit to have. But one would be deluded to think it’s goig to be easy. There are at least 12 pilots this year who have been putting in times that are within a few seconds of each other. It’s going to be a very interesting season.”

Arch was clearly upset with the disqualification. He said: "I don't have a clue about what the stewards saw," said Arch. "It was a normal racing situation. Judging like that is a concern for the sport. That's going to have a negative effect on the world championship."

The first race of the 2010 season was also a learning experience for the two rookies. Martin Sonka of the Czech Republic, who celebrated his 32nd birthday with a strong performance in Qualifying on Friday, picked up 20 penalty points on Saturday and ended up 13th. Brazil’s Adilson Kindlemann had an even more eventful race, picking up 28 penalty points including 12 for hitting two Air Gates.

I'm flying up from Atlanta to go see the race!! I haven't seen an air race in person before so i'm pumped!:rawk:

Will probably go to the NYC race (June 19/20). You can sign up on the website to get an email once the tickets go on sale. Hotels are relatively cheap right now in Jersey City which is 1 mile from the course.

Perhaps a chance for a JC M&G
