So FlyChicaga pointed out on FB that JFK is currently experiencing a ground stop until 6pm EST for winds.....

Most recent wind report was 09039G46.

Some are landing, some are going around.

Just recently.....

JetBlue 123, Going Around....followed immediately by Mexicana 123, Going Around. Then a split second after receiving their missed instructions, I hear Mexicana 123, we need to divert to to Montreal.

It could easily be unrelated I suppose, but do airlines rules that state one attempt and then it's off to the divert? It almost seems like the Mexicana pilots said screw it, we are not going back through that again...
 
It's judgement call based on fuel and the crew's assessment of whether or not another approach attempt would be safe and worthwhile. That's really all there is to it. Sometimes you simply don't have the fuel to try 2 or 3 approaches and still have enough to make it to your alternate with an adequate amount in reserve.
 
Sometimes you have enough fuel to "give it a shot" and to divert to your alternate.

If you "give it a shot" and the conditions were that it wasn't feasible to shoot another approach and not have sufficient fuel to reach your alternate, time to bug out! ;)

You always want to be cognizant of the fuel it takes to get from where you are, shoot an approach and then divert to your alternate, landing there with a quantity of fuel you feel comfortable with.

The only two people that have any clue of what your current "bingo" fuel is are yourself and the other crewmember and the time to form a game plan is well before reaching that point.
 
That all makes sense. I guess I didn't event think about fuel when I was typing... :o Just wondering along the lines of "if the winds, are 'X' and you have to go missed due to windshear or ???? don't bother trying again. Time to divert......
 
Righto! In fact, we had done a short flight from SBP to SFO and had a whole bunch of fuel on board, over two hours left when we arrived. (I like gas) the runways in SFO were great except for the ends of the 28's. People were getting in but with approach lights at mins and down to 100' for the green lights. We shot the apporach, and had to go missed....nothing but grey spray paint on the wind screen. Our alternate was SJC, but that was under some fog as well, but we had flown over MRY which was only 20 minutes away and was clear and a million. We figured we could take 4 shots at it if we wanted... we got in at mins the next time around...what was silly was that we could have landed visually on the 1's...19's or the 10's!
Other times it's one and done, we move on.
 
That does not sound fun at all! Wind is still pretty high over there..

I cancelled my commercial long XC this morning, probably a good idea considering we're getting 06021G29KT over here in SE MI...

that's what the metar says.....Tower just reported 09039/G46.

DL187 going around...."lost the gs/loc."
 
Man, I've been listening for 4min and heard 3 aircraft go around... that JBU was lucky to get out!
 
and couple of holds sucking up fuel I suppose doesnt help:

Update now gusts to 56! Holy cow!

Sounds like most of them are turning back.... scary stuff. The A380 diverted to BOS... that thing must be like trying to land a sailboat.
