Look at what made the list!

I guess I missed where the article even said "regional"? It is just talking about ALL airline pilots. Got to factor in the big airplanes too, here. When you do that, the numbers are not out of line at all. In fact, the regional salaries just drag the numbers down quite a bit. The part of the article that's missing is the amount of qualifications it takes to get hired in the first place!

Why should you factor in big airplanes in starting pay? The article is CLEARLY stating to its readers that an entry level employee in the aviation industry can expect $55,000 a year....

Personally, besides being a pilot, none of those jobs seem remotely interesting to me. Financial Manager? Mathematician? Cool...

Mathematician?

Outside of college I don't think I have even known an employed mathematician. :dunno:

OMG! 431 at Bush, we've got him at gunpoint, we need a quadratic equation solved or this man will DIE! ;)

And it always seems to be on these lists...

Tell me, other than being a professor...what exactly does someone with a title of "mathematician" do?

I'll let Waco answer that, but in the meantime, here is XKCD's take on it.

Essentially, everything in science is based on math.

They hang out in ATMs and dispense money properly. It's difficult to spit out $80 in $20's that fast. Do you think it's a computer whipping out money like that? No. It's a Mathematician.

Ooh! That just saved me an episode of "How Things Are Made" on cable! Hoo hoo!

Oh I know it...I'm not trying to trivialize the subject of math. I'm just wondering what somebody who is officially a "mathematician" does. It seems that everyone is in the applied fields like physics (electrical/mech engineering, etc).

Good comic by the way. :)

Make bank on Wall Street.

pilots make more than lawyers?
wow, i must be working for the wrong company.

seriously though, are they assuming pilots only work 1000 hours and so doubling the pay to make a 2000 hour year?

No, the pay looks actually low for places like FedEx, et al.

Where did it CLEARLY say that? Or, put another way, it also skipped the apprenticeship time for doctors and lawyers. Not sure about mathematicians, although will say we have a few that are now pilots for us!

In answer to what they do, most seemed to do data analysis. Google and similar companies hire a LOT of them, so that is probably skewing the averages for that field.
