Harrison Ford slammed for 'unnecessary' flights

Greetings, Professor Falken
I'm hoping this doesn't turn into a global warming debate but this is the sort of thing that happens when one group of people don't fully understand what another group of people does. Dangerous when it infringes on personal freedoms.

Harrison Ford slammed for 'unnecessary' flights
Environmental activists have blasted Harrison Ford for making "unnecessary" trips by air, following revelations he once made a jet journey to buy a cheeseburger.

The "Indiana Jones" star began flying when he was 52. After receiving his license, he went on to purchase several aircraft, which he keeps at Santa Monica Airport in California.

He recently revealed in an interview the extent of his love for piloting, telling Britain's Live magazine, "Learning to fly was a work of art. I'm so passionate about flying I often fly up the coast for a cheeseburger. Flying is like good music; it elevates the spirit and it's an exhilarating freedom."

But the 67-year-old has come under fire from experts at Carbonfootprint.com over the comments, who are outraged he would make an airplane journey for such an "unnecessary" trip.

And Dr. Wendy Buckley, director of the Web site, has called on Ford to set an environmental example and cut back on his flying.

She tells WENN, "Flying is a huge source of carbon emissions and making unnecessary journeys by plane can no longer be seen as responsible to our environment.

"Stars like Harrison Ford need to embrace the huge opportunity to lead by example in the battle against climate change -- reduce their overall lifestyle carbon footprint and carbon offset those unavoidable emissions."

Wait until Dr. Wendy Buckley is a government appointee or in charge of something. Then your travel and flying will be dictated by what she and other governmental authorities deem to be "necessary".

Bunch of candy-ass liberal BS if you ask me. If Harrison Ford in any way adjusts his flying habits or lifestyle to accomodate these idiots then we should in some way shun him.

 These people do not remotely understand the addiction, joy and peace that comes with flying. It sounds like they just want to get on the radar. Seriously, if all the guys like Harrison Ford STOPPED flying “up the coast for $1000 hamburgers", right now, today, the reduction in pollution and greenhouse gases would be miniscule! Sheesh! Pick a bigger battle.

I am probably one of the biggest tree huggers around here, but these people need to let a man fly his plane. As Lee said, we have bigger fish to fry.

Off the top of my head, Ford owns at least one piston popper.

awesome - yes.
excessive carbon - no.

:yeahthat: These people need to seriously take their heads out of their posteriors and and re-evaluate what they're actually trying to do.

Agreed! Climate, and the environment are two of my top concerns... And I am not delusional enough to believe that humans have nothing to do with it... Any intelligent person can easily understand that we are not innocent with respect to climate change and environmental destruction... HOWEVER, Harrison Ford flying is jet is going to represent a VERY miniscule amount of carbon emissions... Fortunately, as more and more people wake up and smell the roses, we will no doubt see the uses of more ecofriendly fuels, engines, et cetera in the future - then the issue will hopefully be a mute point (at least more mute than it is now).

How is flying to get a cheeseburger any different than flying somewhere for a vacation, or to sign a business document. These people are complete hypocrites unless they can honestly say they have never set foot on an airplane, or in a car to the drive through for that matter.

Hours are hours.

It was cross-country navigation training that just happened to have food at one end of it.

Same here. I'll go out of my way to recycle, use canvas bags, etc. Odds are good those blasting Ford for his plane use drive around shopping several hundred miles on the weekend in their cars. Pot, meet kettle.

I declare Dr. Wendy Buckley to be an unnecessary burden on the environment.

See...it was for proficiency purposes, therefore making him a safer pilot. A safer pilot benefits everyone. Further, he spent money at FBOs, helping local economies. He's not harming the environment, he's helping the economy! :D

I hear'd he's been doing tons of runs to the Dominican Republic shuttling supplies...can't win with these people huh?

Man made global warming is a bunch of Bravo Sierra put out by a bunch of power mad liberals who want to tell you how to live your life!

Cue someone to tell you that you have no odea what you're talking about because you don't have at least 3 PhDs in 4, 3, 2.........

Well they have a point. This is what he was flying to get that cheeseburger.

All aircraft combined only account for something like two percent of greenhouse gas emissions. Let's worry about the other 98 percent first.
