To make it CLEAR.......

The only person who might care would be AMR because he's likely caused people to miss connections for no good reason. When I flew for Mesa I flew slow IF we were early or had very good tailwinds. I brought the power back to just over 50% a few times, but I still made all my arrival times, usually early. If we were running late it was balls to the wall.

There are always appropriate times to fly slow.

When climbing away from you direction of travel, before turning on course.

When on vectors to a long final.. and you are on what amounts to a downwind. The 6 mile hole they are going to squeeze you into is moving towards you at the same time right?

Climbing with a strong tail wind... etc.

If you are really in tune with how things are running, you can save a fair amout of fuel by smartly varying your profile.

I agree with all except the climb. Climb at charted power so in case one of those engines decides to take and f day you have all available power helping you out. The last thing you need to do is worry about advancing that power lever forward as you try to handle the yaw of an aircraft. Just my two cents but I am a lowly FO.

Reduced speed in the climb more often than not, just means you pitched for a higher rate of climb.... I don't plan on climbing at partial power.
