Recent CFI Shebles

Anybody been to Shebles recently for the intial cfi course. I searched the old threads and everything seems at least a year old. Thanks

I would love to find more info regarding recent instructor training at Shebles. I'm planning on going to Shebles to get my CFI/CFII within the next few months.

I finished my instrument rating and had my commercial SEL ride with them.

I have no personal information on this school, but I did look at their website http://shebleaviation.com/pilot-training/certified-flight-instructor-courses/ and they appear to be on the pricey side imo. According to their site the CFI course only includes up to 5 flight hours and possibly 32 hrs of ground for $4,650.

An FBO on the high side would probably breakdown to:
S.E. Complex (dual) $200/hr x 5 = $1,000
Ground school: $50/hr x 32 = $1,600
Total: $2,600
Savings: $2,050

Edit: Am I missing something?

I agree that Shebles might seem to be pricey but training in the midwest and dealing with crazy weather cost money as well.

Is the old man at Shebles going to do the initial checkride?

I knew that years ago, the owner does the initial checkride but no sure for now.

Hello everyone. Im new to JC, glad to see there is a good forum community for aviation. I am very much considering doing single engine commerical through MEI. My question is whether training there makes you less marketable then perhaps going some where else. My current instructor told me that he has friends that were virtually unemployable as a result of doing training at Sheble. Does anyone think there is any validity to this recomendation from my instructor? Thanks guys...:)

I did a couple of ratings there. Nobody ever asked anything about where I got any ratings - Sheble or otherwise. Maybe low time they might. A rating is a rating.

CFI initial needs to be organized through the FSDO, so I don't think Sr. would do the ride. He can do the add-ons. Don't kid yourself he needs to see what any examiner would want, and is no push over. I have seen him turf several people.

The trick is being prepared for the ride before you get there. You don't have time to learn about VMC from scratch once you get there for your multi ride (for example). You get the tune-up for your ride but it is really up to you to study and be ready, so come prepared.

The CFI (initial) is kind of a different one though. You spend a lot of time working each day which is why it is 10 days.

Falcon is spot on. The FSDO does all of the CFI checkrides for Sheble students. There is no way the FAA is going to make this a cakewalk for you. But you won't take the checkride until you are ready.

Best advise is be almost ready for your ride before you even set foot in Shebles. If you are 80% then Sheble will get you the other 20%. This is great for those students that have been working on their rating for a while and just need that extra push to get over the hump.

Make sure you have all of your writtens passed prior to starting at Shebles. Also plan to stay an extra week when you get there. If you know this going in, then you will have no problem. The weather is not always great in Kingman and Sun Valley.

You will get what you need at Shebles and I recommend them.

When Las Vegas FSDO gets too busy, then there is a chance for a ride with Joe Sr.
My friend got his CFI/CFII/MEI two years ago and all of his rides were with Sr.

I finished up my instrument rating and commercial at Shebles, great people and fine flight school-but you have to come prepared and be ready to "earn" your rating not buy it!

I've been studying/working on my CFI/CFII ticket for some time and planning on getting it done some time over the summer at Shebles...

Regarding Sr. doing CFI initial rides - I had that same thing happen at SDL with a CFI initial - a FSDO examiner was assigned but they were too busy so that examiner authorized one of the DPE's I had used previously (out of luck; no relation to the assignment) to be able to do the ride. It is possible but hit mor miss.

Instrument was one of the ratings I did at Shebles (that seems like a long time ago!). As everyone has said make sure you are well prepared before you get there (I like the 80% analogy but if you are pretty solid on flying and you have studied to pass the written test recently 60% or 70% is still not a stretch - but work hard once you get there!).

You also need to have your 50 hours XC PIC or at least be close. You will fly each day, some days doing practice under the hood, some in the SIM (windy days), and then study all night. They will give you the basic direction during ground, but it is also up to you to study all of the material they give you and the supporting charts and plates to be able to at least explain how to competently act in IFR. The instructors and examiners want you to succeed, but it is whatever you make of it and how hard you work that will determine how much you learn and how well you do. This is a lot to do in 10 days.

Also just wanted to add one thing regarding cost. Yes you could get things done cheaper at the FBO at home, in a perfect world. A lot of us have waited until we have an extra $150 in the pocket, do a lesson, and then wait again. With accellerated training you have already committed the full amount.

And then there are always delays and distractions at home. Something always comes up. You maybe fly consistently 2 times a week for several weeks, get close, then quit for 4 weeks and have to go through it again.

At Sheble's you are forced to dedicate your time and committed to making your rating happen. This is the advantage when you go to Shebles, or ATP, or many of the others; but also why everyone cautions that you need to be ready for it. Your success depends on you and you have already spent the money.

You pay for the weather and the get er done mentality.

I picked up both my CFII and MEI in 4 days. Total.

The people are great, the equipment isnt prestine, but if your certificate says what you want it to...does it really matter?

Sure, you will not be the greatest instructor. That comes with experience and actually building your knowledge over time. Think of your initial as a private certificate...its only the beginning and there is much more to be said, done, and learned.

FWIW, Id take the Vegas FSDO over Scottsdale anyday.
