Anyone got a plate for the Bay approach? It's not in my squadron smart pack, but I intend on flying it on the way back from the big boat this week (given the Skipper's blessing FWIW)

Are we talking about fixed-wing or rotary? I think it's pretty straight-foward...Don't hit the bay bridge...otherwise, turn left at the first runway and land...

Is there a reason its not in the sqdn smart pack?

But you intend on flying it.

Hmmm.....

:)

Fixed wing

We got the course rules brief from the tower chief this AM, sounds pretty straightforward. 4 DME, right turn, cross beach at 1k, then loop around the bay for visual into rwy 18.

I concur with MikeD. Don't be that guy that quals at the boat and then does something dumb on the way back to the beach. It's cool and fun enough just going to the boat for the first time. You'll have plenty of opportunities for bay tours in the future.

Fully agree sir. Both skippers were present this morning when they briefed it, and the word was that until someone goons it up and overflies hotel del, we can do the break or the bay approach. Just trying to do my homework so I can avoid being "that guy" :)

Back in 96, I was that guy. I had just been shot off from the USS Kitty Hawk after a horrible first day CQ'ing....horrible for me anyway. We were off the coast of San Diego and the marine layer over the ocean started at 1000' and went all the way up to 4k or so. So the moment I take the cat stroke, my only radio goes full static. I climb through the thick layer to 8k or so, about 60 miles from North Island. I can't get the radio to work so I decided to squawk lost comm and make all calls in the blind. Of course what do I squawk? That's right, 7700. About 25-20 miles out, right near where Class B starts, a lead safe found me. I joined his wing and we did a PAR to touchdown where my radio suddenly came back to life. Not a huge deal but I got chewed out regardless. Fun times.

At least you didn't squawk 7500. ;)
