Just ordered my new Canon 7D! Got a brand new one with all the standard accessories plus a backpack, card reader, 2 16GB CF cards, tripod, extended flash, lens cleaning kit, lens hood, and a wireless remote shutter all for $1579. Free shipping! Its an awesome camera with HD video that normally comes to about $2000 if you buy it at a store or have it shipped to CA. Great deal. I'm poor now, but oh well. Next stop is GGG to get my new lens off a friend, but I can't wait to be taking pictures again. It totally sucks having your camera stolen. I advise you to never leave anything expensive in an overhead bin when you plan on sleeping. I never will again.

I already have 2 Canon lenses, a 22-58mm and a 38-90mm that came with my previous 2 cameras(A film Rebel and a digital one). My larger lens was stolen with the camera, but that thing is a piece of crap I was going to just give away anyway so good riddance.

My friend in GGG is going to be giving me this lens, its usually about $200-250 but I traded it to him for a buddy pass.

Next paycheck I'm going to get a wide angle conversion lens to put over my 22-58mm lens. That's going to be the perfect toy for some kick ass shots in the cockpit.

Nice man!! I find it interesting that you're looking in the opposite direction that I am on the lenses. The longest I've got is a 55-200 and I need more zoom! What kind of tripod did you get? I'm using an old hand-me-down, but it's not very stable at all...

Sweet!

I just got a D3000 kit from Cameta Camera with the 18-55mm and 55-200 AF-S DX lenses, bag, cleaning kit etc....For $690 to my door.

I'm new to the D-SLR thing, P&S was getting old!

I use a Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM with the 40D... works very nicely for many situations and I can still get the reach I need for good aircraft shots.

Yikes! That must run as much as the 7D body!

Congrats on the new camera Chase. I just bought a Canon 500D (T1i) a couple of weeks ago, and I'm already trying to decide between the 7D and the 5D MK II for my upgrade!

Well, the only stuff I really use my larger lens for is aircraft shots. I never really need a 100-300mm for anything else, and as far as planespotting does go, its pretty rare that I need 300mm for a picture. Usually if your so far away you that need 300mm+, the picture will come out hazy anyway. I also have a MF 600-1000mm lens somewhere in my garage, but its really a POS. Magnifying a shot by 1000mm brings out every ounce of haze, and I didn't have a remote shutter so the slightest shaking would ruin a shot at that zoom. Being manual focus doesn't help either. But I want a fisheye because there are a lot of unique shots you can get with one, especially in cockpits or on the ramp, or even standing under a tall building.

As far as a tripod goes, I have a pretty nice one my girlfriend got me from her art school. I'm 6'1 and I can take shots at eye level, its pretty sturdy too. The one in the package I got is much smaller, if it turns out to be worth anything maybe I can send it to you.

Wow, that's pretty impressive! At 6' flat, I still have to stoop over with the tripod I've got. If you're thinking about getting rid of the other one, definitely let me know and we'll see if we can work out a deal!

Just curious, what are your thoughts on heads? I'm working with a basic pan-tilt right now, but I've been kind of drooling over the geared heads lately.

Thats why you get a 10-20 or a 10-22. None of that fisheye stuff around the edges. You just get one wide ass photo!

Yeah, I plan on getting one down the road. But its $20-25 for the converter and $350-400 for a full on 10-20mm. I'm going to be diving into my IFR, no way I'll have money to drop $400 on a lens anytime soon after buying this 7D. But as Steve just pointed out, you do get black edges when you zoom out all the way with a converter. If you're handy with photoshop, its not that big of a deal, but depending on what you're shooting it can get annoying.
