B18 Aton Bay Ice Runway

Here is a comparison with a low wing tri gear aircraft. Different technique but we both had the same result.

I know a guy who did that in a Beech 99. But I havn't seen him anymore at work just kinda vanished.

I swear that Tiger sounds like a Ski-Doo on the video!

that's probably because you were listening to a ski-doo. There are a bunch of sledders, and ice fishing huts on the lake.

As for the cirrus, I haven't flown the cirrus down there (did it in a 172 last year), but the only thing I would be concerned about is the castering nosewheel, and how ice affect that. Would I take it in? no, I don't really want to test out my proficiency in ice lndings in a 310 hp 300,000 dollar airplane. Could it be done? probably by a very proficient pilot in that airplane, especially with little to no x-wind.

Honestly, normally landing on the ice is no big deal, and you actually get some traction. Once the ice gets wet it gets sketchy. A local who lives over near little squam takes a scenica in there... Or used to.

Re: B18 Alton Bay Ice Runway

Nice vids! Wish I had the time to go east this winter.
I've done some Cirrus landings up in MN on ice covered runways, but we had 5000+ ft to stop in. My biggest concern would be getting rid of all that energy after touchdown; it steered 'OK' at taxi speeds but again, big wide taxiway and ramp area.

Anyone know if the Navion in the doofus Tiger video is based at Marlboro, MA? My dad's friend owns one just like that. I can't remember the N# offhand.

Looks like I sat next to a fellow JC'er at the Alton Bay diner and didn't even know it! Are you going back up there for the Winter Carnival, USMC-SSGT?

Small world.....you must be the guy who flew up from Marlboro.

I am overnighting in BOS the night before with around a 4pm showtime on Sunday the 14th so time and weather permitting I will likely head up in the morning.

I know a guy who's been wondering if a Cirrus could make it in there. Thoughts?

Our Runway here in Wyoming is ice covered most of the winter and I land/takeoff a Cirrus all winter long.

The only Issue I have is with the wheel pants, I once took the Cirrus out of a warm hanger, taxied it out with 3 inches of snow on the ramp and taxiways, The wheel pants got full of snow (and melted with a warm plane) Then froze up at altitude. When I landed at another runway that was ice covered (and only 2500 feet long) I didnt have any steering and nearly ran it off the runway because the wheels were locked up.

Im not a big fan of wheel pants up here in the Rockies.

Are they required on the Cirrus? Or can you remove them a la Cessna or Piper?

Im not sure, I never looked it up in the POH, Regardless, My boss would never allow me to take them off.

I honestly don't know either but in the depths of my vauge memory, I think that wheelpants were an option on the SRV. Maybe it was just the nose wheel pant. I have never seen a cirrus with the pants off that wasn't in the MX shop.

Congrats on the ASES raiting!

I don't need it this year. A year ago I would love to have it :D

Awesome! I feel like I should be able to contribute, living in an igloo and all, but that would be a first for my logbook!
