Gold Seal/CFI Renewal Questions

Questions:

1. If I go 8 for 8 (100%) for my practical test endorsements, do I qualify for a Gold Seal Certificate? Or do I need to wait until I sign off 10 applicants?

2. For the CFI renewal, if I go 4 for 4 (100%) for my practical test endorsements, do I qualify for a renewal? Or do I need to wait until my 5th sign off?

Similar questions, I'm sure they have the same answers. Thanks for the help.

No, you have to recommend 5/10 w/ either 4/8 passing. You would think they would cut you a break but they don't.

a. The flight instructor must hold a commercial pilot certificate with an instrument rating (glider flight instructors need not hold an instrument rating) or an ATP certificate;
b. The flight instructor must hold a ground instructor certificate with an advanced or instrument ground instructor rating; and
c. The flight instructor must have accomplished the following within the previous 24 months:
​
(1) Trained and recommended at least 10 applicants for a practical test, at least 8 of whom passed their tests on the first attempt

It's not the same. I know this is cuttin' a fine hair, but training 10 guys, out of which only 8 pass, does not give the young flight instructor the same level of experience as training 8 guys of which all pass. Think about it.

Sure it does... What if 1-8 all pass and then 9 & 10 fail? I'm pretty sure the instructor isn't going to just stop training their students 9 & 10 just because s/he already will have an 80% pass rate.. That's just stupid.
 
The FAA isn't looking specifically for a pass/fail record, they are also looking for the overall experience of five or ten sign offs (depending on which reg).
 
Agreed. 10 is better than 8.

The 80% is only required for the previous 2 years correct? The record prior to that does not matter?

The instructor is going to (hopefully) fix the problem(s) with the 1 or 2 failures, and learn from the doing.
This is an example of looking beyond the minimum requirements. It seems you are trying to see it in terms of "making 80%". Once I've done that, why continue?

The regulatory requirement is number 1, to have trained 10 applicants. Next, you are given the leeway of having 2 out of those 10 "freeze up", and not pass. Not because they really are not prepared, but because we are all humans and make mistakes, especially on tests, so...that is your break. That is the opportunity to learn more and better prepare your student beyond good pilot proficiency, but also to prepare him for "checkride-itis".

Keep trying for 100%.

Yes it is whatever you have had in the 24 months prior. you could have 100 fails and 10 passes.. if those 100 fails were 25+ months ago it doesn't matter.

And from talking to a FSDO guy, my understanding is anytime you look back 24 months, and you have 80% pass w/ at least 5 sign offs, you can renew your CFI.
