1-Year Furloughed!

It has been 1-Year now since I have been furloughed from my airline. It has been a rough and challenging time for all of us in the aviation industry, and it has affected all of us in a way. Lay-offs, furloughs, downgrades, base closures and deterioration in quality of life have all been part of this downturn. We are all frustrated and just trying to make it through one of the worst downturns this industry has seen.

Since being furloughed, I have had the opportunity to interview with a few companies, including airlines, 135 operators and even a corporate job. Even though I have been unsuccessful obtaining a flying job, I would have never been able to gain an interview if it wouldn’t have been for the help and support of my friends, former colleagues or members of jetcareers.

The purpose of this post is not to whine about my situation or tell people to give up. I wanted to stress how important it is to network and remind people that aviation is a small world. We are finally starting to see some movement in the industry, whether it’s recalls or small amounts of hiring. However, the competition for these jobs is fierce. Don’t be afraid to ask someone to walk in a resume or write you a letter of recommendation, even if it is someone who you haven’t talked to in a long time, you’ll be surprised what they can do for you. I have seen this first hand! Don’t be afraid to ask Jetcareers members for help, that’s why this forum is so great, people helping people!

This industry will turn around! It is only a matter of time. Keep networking, keep making contacts and keep building your resume.

We'll find ya something somewhere man. You've been a great asset to this forum for other folks to get hired.

You mean the man with all the job postings is jobless. I guess that would explain how you know of all the openings. What/where are you looking for and what are your hours?

Will someone walk this dudes resume in somewhere and make it happen?

+1!

It's about time. CRJ has posted hundreds and hundreds of jobs for people to look at and be picky about. Even though I don't know him personally and have "never walked a mile in 121 shoes" I do not doubt this guys integrity and motivation one bit. Would be cool to see him land a good job. He's a perfect example of "paying it forward" and an asset to this forum and our community.

Well, thanks guys, but people have been more than willing to help me out and walk in resumes already. It's just a crappy time right now.

I know him personally and can vouch for him. Knew him in college and as I was without a car he never hesitated to help whenever I needed a ride somewhere.

Psychologically, being furloughed is incredibly, incredibly hard to deal with. You work towards a goal for so long, only to obtain it for a short period of time and then you're shoved out on the street. In trying to find other employment so you can pay the bills, you think to yourself, "I'm bagging groceries? A month ago I was flying airliners around. Is this really happening?"

I hope you find a new job sometime soon. Have you applied at Ameriflight?

Ditto about AMF. Are you able/willing to move? I just got a buddy who was furloughed from CS on over there. And there are a lot of current AMFers here who are in the loop who would help you out.

Thanks for the info.

I interviewed with AMF last July in SLC with the Asst. Chief Pilot. Very nice guy, long interview, but it went well, and so did the simulator, but the folks in Burbank didn't like me for whatever reason. Still scratching my head about that one, but that's the way it is.

Are you able/willing to move?

I am more than willing to move for the right job. I'd like to stay out West, but most of the flying and money is on the east coast or SoCal.

I still think there will be more companies hiring and more movement come Spring time, maybe I'm too optimistic, but that's what I hope for and think will happen.
