Air Marshals

Overpaid. Let them pay their locality pay. I'd like to see the gov't become more cost conscious when it comes with how they shell out my money.

They get paid locality pay because they have no say in where they will be based. Hmmm.... they have something that airlines don't, but should, have.

Wow, can't believe there are pilots on any forum anywhere actually believing watching the news or some documentary would reveal how FAM or any LEO actually operate. What does it say when we have pilots going from zero to hero in 90 days while LEO's go through a 6 month academy who's going to know more about what a LE does? Sure ain't a pilot...

I'm sure any LEO will tell you that expecting the average citizen to intervene in a dynamic situation is asking alot. Next time see how many people intervene when a passenger is going ape crap on a gate agent or FA, that'll tell you how much people want to get involved...

So what determines if an Air Marshal is on a give flight? It doesn't seem practical to have one on every single flight. Do they base it on size of the aircraft length of the flight or what? Or is all that information in some classified TSA manual that we aren't supposed to know about, but somehow got posted online somewhere?
All I will say is that if they're on a flight that I'm boarding, all I need to know is that they're there, everything else is on a need to know basis and if you need to ask then you don't need to know.:)

So your solution is to bag the FAMs and just let vigilante justice rule?

"YEE HAW! Git a rope and hang that there varmit!"

Sounds better every time I hear it.

3green, what you seem to be saying is "Shut up, stupid taxpayer and do what you're told! Leave these things to the experts"

I'm not sure how many passengers have "gone off" on a gate agent in the air, but I don't know of any times that a flight had to be diverted because a passenger "went off" on a FA when the passengerd didn't jump in to help.

And finally, BillErvin, I said before I was sorry for hurting your feelings. Sheesh, even I realize how hard it is for LEO's to remember how brave & heroic you are if you don't constantly remind yourself (and anyone else who'll listen). Far be it from me to stop you from patting yourself on the back.:D

It's interesting how us pilots get upset when passengers make assumptions about what we do, and how we do it. Yet we feel we can do the same about other professions. Puts things in perspective, doesn't it?

This argument is similar to arguments against FFDOs. We won't know if Air Marshalls, the TSA, or FFDOs are really effective until they're tested. I, for one, hope we'll never have to find out just how effective these defenses are.

After 9/11, the passengers themselves have handled numerous situations more than adequately, including the two attempted bombings and even a few attempts to open the airplane door in-flight.

Definitely leave things for the experts, if at all possible. Intervene only as necessary if you're Joe Pax.

Otherwise, you get this........yeah, the pax handled this well ;):

And Mike H, your last paragraph was completely unwarranted and unprofessional. Walk in someone's shoes before opening mouth and inserting foot.

No, where did you get that? What I'm saying is they have the training and experience to deal with the situations. Don't tell me your one of those GA aviation type pilots that likes to tell 121 crews after landing how they should fly the plane? cheeeezzz...

I've worked both as a 121 airline pilot and in LEO so I think I can safely comment on what a pilot can do and what a LEO can do. Not sure why anyone with zero experience in either would act like they knew what they were talking about. I'll leave this topic alone at that...

Moderators and Doug, my apologizes in advance.:D

You know what, you have no clue about our training and that is truly an ignorant statement.

I'll second that.

Bill thank you for your service. I have flown with FAM's on numerous occassions and have yet to met one that wasn't professional.

Do you not take control of a "situation" by ordering all passengers to remain seated, face forward, heads down and don't look around with the implied threat of being shot if they don't comply?

Not that NBC/CBS/ABC would never make any of that stuff up, but that's what I've seen numerous times.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings by implying that you're less than a super hero

LOL, you believe the media... :sarcasm:
