Cool California Airports

+1 for Big Bear and Avalon. Buffalo burgers are always nice after a sweet approach into AVX.

-10 for Blythe and Needles

Sorry, forgot the :sarcasm: tag!

I landed on a dirt strip somewhere on the "Hoopa" reservation up in NorCal once, that was pretty cool.

I knew it was straight sarcasm ;). I was just there this past week. Nice runways, but that's about it for EED.

Speaking of dirt strips, I just landed on my first in southern Nevada, 1L4...it was interesting.

Santa Paula for sure, also Halfmoon Bay(When its not foggy its breath-taking), RHV(flying the pattern there is all kinds of fun when its busy, and I'm not being sarcastic), New Jerusalem(crazy barely paved runway which doubles as a taxiway), and Hayward(all sorts of low-tight turns in that pattern and you're right next to all the OAK arrivals) are the airports I have the most fun flying into here.

Catalina is probably the most fun if you ask me, but there is a $50 landing fee.

$50? I thought it was $25.

Yeah, not quite sure about Blythe. The only thing I can think of is you fly past the airport a few miles and you're in AZ over the Colorado River.

I forgot to add Palm Springs. If you park at Signature you can probably take their beater car and go into the city for a few hours.

Screw Palm Springs, Thermal is -115 MSL.

Plus it's in the same valley as Palm Springs. (which doesn't say much)

Pismo Beach has an overnight camping area adjacent to the strip, first come first serve.

Mammoth Lakes- very scenic flight up the owens valley. I wouldn't do it in anything that wasn't atleast turbocharged or turbine.

San Louis Obispo- some of the most scenic shores in California IMHO

Visalia -in the summer (:sarcasm::D:D)

Flabob, Santa Paula.

Wacofan really does know best. Santa Paula is my favorite airport of them all. It is a true, legit old school GA airport, plus the green hanger at the east end used to belong to Steve McQueen.

I also really like Oceano, Catalina and Kern Valley. Half Moon bay is also really neat location.

DANG IT! KLB beat me to it! Haha, I was just gonna say Mammoth! Just flew there yesterday (Sat) for the 1st time in our Seneca I. Absolutely beautiful! Also, been lots of whales on the way to AVX over the past two weeks. Big Bear is my standby favorite. And have to agree, Sedona is WELL worth the trip. Oceano has been on my list of URGENT things-2-do though. Have fun!

and KSEZ has a good resturant on the field
Just was there yesterday and yes it is really cool. Can't say as I was in love with the restaurant though!

Flying over LAX in the VFR corridor is always interesting and good for a few stories over dinner.
No longer exhists. However, there is a special flight rules area as well as the mini route and a few others.

EED is off the hizzle, what are you talking about? :)

yeah, not so much. :rotfl: We used to tell the foreign students that there was a casino that would send a limo and a free buffet for pilots.

Sure its out of the So Cal area, but there's a great little restaurant that recently opened up at HII. A little bbq place....so good!

I've flown to all those airports. Hands down the best airport to go is Shelter Cove (0Q5). It would be a little trek from LGB but its all encompassingly cool.

Harris Ranch, Paso Robles, Columbia, Half Moon Bay, Petaluma, Monterey, Calaveras, Georgetown, Auburn, Placerville. So many others I cant think of.
