The Mighty C150s

Oh I was there, long ago. Don't remember the PRC planes with nose art back then. Just looks odd on a 150, although the artwork itself is nice.

Yeah the work is nice. I don't think the Prescott guys have nose are on theirs. They get the juiced up high powered engines though. :(

Update for those of you who might be interested:

I recently downed the airplane enough so that the MX guys would actually disassemble the engine and look for the cause of the problems. We discovered that a. we had a cracked cylinder, b. I believe it was the exhaust manifold was shot since the engine was running too hot and too lean, and c. the previous owner of the engine had replaced the rocker arms with those from a 6 cylinder Continental engine which did not appropriately match what was supposed to be on our little O-200.

What came from this? We need a new O-200! Should happen in about a month, but hopefully she'll be up flying soon!

Was this on the doggy one?

Yep this was on the J model that I kept telling everyone something was wrong with.
"See! I WASN'T nuts!"

I love that feeling! Good on you bringing it to peoples' attention. I tell the CFIs here that if they squawk something, I can't guarantee that it'll get fixed (I'm just a monkey after all and can only really spend my time on what the boss wants me to spend my time on), but I can sure guarantee that if they DON'T squawk it, it won't get fixed.

The weird thing is this thing, I'm assuming, went through inspections while you were having issues with it.

A cracked cylinder is usualy really easy to find.

Yep. We've had it for a few years. I'm not sure if that happened recently or not. I'd assume so though. Work going around is that they borescoped it and found the crack. I believe it was internal.

Just wait until this kind of stuff starts happening to the Tecnam. Think of the fun that would involve

Ugh it's bad enough it's sitting here rotting away on the ramp with 99.0 hours on it since no one knows what kind of oil to put in the thing....nevermind do a 100hr on it (which isn't even required) since it's not for hire. Now they want to put a Dynon panel in it. Waste. Of. Money.

Dynon is cool, but not worth the time its going to take to put in it.

In regards to the oil. http://www.pipistrel.si/files/d00118.pdf Pages 10-11 thru 10-12.

Or better yet http://www.rotax-aircraft-engines.com/pdf/dokus/d03830.pdf page 3 lists various oil types you can use. Also, you guys are doing 50 hour oil changes, right, since I assume you aren't going out and getting Mogas for it?

another item you may want to look into is the propellor. even fixed pitch props should be overhauled at engine overhaul, but often will pass 8000 hours without attention other than being dressed and checked during annuals.

even metal props will warp over time from age, heat, and stress. the result is a propellor that is fighting itself and thus undergoing even more stress.

thankfully the overhaul cost isn't too expensive. the prop will be checked for cracks, re-bent to original specifications (or owner's desires), and painted/balanced.

my father's pa-16 had 2500 hours 50 years when the propellor was overhauled. the reduction in vibration was notable and the cruise picked up about 5mph.
