Delta Connection Academy Sold!

Doug,

The "esteemed" :rotfl: Mr. Raker is now a salesman for CAE/SimuFlite in the NY region. A far cry from the aviation master of the universe role he was strutting around as eighteen months ago.

You might also enjoy the following story. I saw his picture on the ERAU Alum invitation for the NBAA cocktail party:

prompting me to write the following:

Ms. Montgomery,

Respectfully, I question your usage of Mr. Raker's photograph on the website http://www.erau.edu/about/events/nbaa.html

Mr. Raker's disastrous activities at the CAPT program have left his former employees and students in financial ruin. There are over 180 young Chinese men whose careers as pilots were aborted after Mr. Raker misspent over six million dollars of their prepaid tuition. In addition, over a dozen domestic students have lost in excess of four hundred thousand dollars in prepaid tuition, much of which was collected at Mr. Raker's direction after knowing that he could not fulfill his contractual obligations to train students.

Currently being sued in both state and federal courts and under criminal investigation for fraud for transactions related to CAPT, Mr. Raker and his holding company FTSI have been forced into involuntary bankruptcy in federal court in Jacksonville in an attempt to reclaim a portion of what was diverted. Finally, Mr. Raker through CAPT owes tens of thousands of dollars in unpaid wages, payroll taxes, 401-k contributions, and unpaid personal leave to his employees, myself included. If you are curious as to how the money was spent, you can see the $1.7 million dollar home he purchased outside Atlanta within weeks of inking the Chinese training contract. It can be viewed here, marked down to $1.1M, as the property has since been seized by the government.

The realities of Mr. Raker's business decisions, current status, and outright larceny are a far cry from what was represented in the puff-piece produced in the Spring 2008 edition of Lift. Not only has this man devastated hundreds of families' lives, but he has again made Embry-Riddle financially liable for the Palm Coast facility. In the interim, the Civil Aviation Authority of China will not approve any new U.S. schools for CAAC Part 141 training as a result of their experience with Mr. Raker. This is resulting in tens of millions of dollars per year in flight training that is being spent in Australia and Canada rather than in the United States because of the broken promises and outright lies of one man.

Mr. Raker has been forced off of the boards of several organizations; Careers in Aviation has removed all traces of his name from their publications. RADM Coane, former Chairman of the Board of FTSI cut all ties with Mr. Raker last November. I would submit that the university does itself no favor by continued public association with such an individual. After all, those last few alumni contributions were financed by a group of twenty-somethings' Key Loan payments--and all they have to show for it are twenty years of loan payments for training never received.

Sincerely,

me

Happy New Year, Doug. I've been enjoying your site for almost a dozen years. Thanks for all the good you do in our community.

Nice!

And thanks!

ERAU seemed to leave out how Shawn Raker stepped on the throat of a fellow alumnus for his own benefit. ERAU will not see a single alumni dollar from my account to theirs as long as he is a poster-child of my university.

He'll probably end up being the next Air Inc. Self-ascribed aviation career expert selling books at carnivals about the upcoming pilot shortage and how, for the low low price of $49.95, this book will show you things that you MUST know so you can go from zero to FedEx 777 captain in six easy steps.

I too almost went to DCA. Not becaues I thought they could get me a job or anything, but because I just wanted to get in and out. Get done quickly. They straight up lied to my face about VA eligibility and I moved back here to Houston for it. When they told me they weren't VA approved, AFTER I moved back, they acted as if it was no big deal. Thankfully I'm from the gulf coast of Texas and it was nice to move back anyway.
Here I am a year later and still haven't quite started my CFI, yet I know I'm better off than if I had blown my money at "the academy".

Good to see something coming from the rumors that have been swirling around Central Florida for the last 18 months.

It's hard to imagine this is a bad thing (save for instructors losing flight bennies they could never get time-off to use, anyway), given the operation at DCA. Whether it turns out to be a good thing, though, we'll just have to wait and see.

Gonna be a pain to paint over "Delta Connection Academy" on all those SR-20s...

I used my VA at DCA. According to the VA, DCA is still an approved school as well as it's Houston Campus. Still better off that you didn't attend.;)

Eh, it's just stickers apparently. We had two former DCA Seminoles at my flight school. Had the same paint job without the logo.
They only did that with the Cirrus a/c. All the other were just painted white with pinstiping.

I coulda sworn when I took the tour back in Dec 2000 they had "Delta Connection Academy" and the phone number stenciled on the white part of the pin striping on the tails of the Seminoles. I remember pulling up to Skymates in 05 and thinking, "Hey. Those look like Delta Connection planes.....but without the writing on the tails."

After listening to everything on here, I still went to DCA. I really enjoyed it. The instruction was very good when I was there and I am not anywhere near 6 figures in debt. Maybe because I worked hard and did not get involved with the bs that comes with anyplace you work for. I feel that DCA did prepare me well for the future. I agree their marketing was/is poor but now their in trouble without DL. Good luck to everyone.

Wow, I had no idea things were so ugly back then. I still can't believe how bad some of the screwjobs have been givin out over the years by some of these hucksters. Good job Doug calling these people out.

Anyway, I wonder how the valuation process works for buying a company whose only value is some seminoles and a claim that is no longer relevant once the purchase is complete. I bet it was sold cheap.

What's bad is that I really didn't call 'em out. I just said that you don't necessarily need to go to DCA in order to get on with a DCI carrier or ultimately get hired by Delta. That plus, "Guaranteed interview? I could get my cat Sprite an interview!"

Apparently four or five people walked out of class and our friend Mr. Raker asked why they were leaving because they were making a "grave career decision" and a couple of the users said, roughly, "we read on the internet that we don't need to go here in order to become airline pilots"

Then he asked "where?"

"Jetcareers"

I'm still looking forward to the day when I inevitably run across him so I can ask him what the hell he was thinking calling a fellow pilot and fellow employee and trying to bully me because the joint he was moonlighting at had a hole blown in their marketing schtick.

Answer this for me - he was a pilot at Delta, but left that so that he could go full time into screwing people on flight training? I bet he is wishing he had stayed flying at Delta at this point.

My understanding was that after he was told to depart the pattern at DCA he purchased the CAPT program from ERAU and was encouraged to leave DAL because of the conflict of interest. From what my wife tells me, he burned any remaining goodwill at the airline with his childish actions against Doug. Basically he violated rule #1: leave your baggage at home.

JC Goon Squad will be on it.

Word is no instructor pay increase with the loss of flight benefits. Wonder how many will be out the door.
