Shanghai

Visiting my parents in Shanghai, here's a few shots from their apartment view. I will update later this week when I have done some exploring. If anybody has been here, let me know if you have any suggestions on fun things to do/see.

I went to Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi'an on a school trip back in '08. I loved it.
I tried to save a plastic chinese coke bottle(like a 20 oz bottle) that was EMPTY, but the jerks at SFO (we went PVG-SFO-BOS) made me throw it away even though it had no liquid in it.

Things to do:
-Take the maglev (I assume you already have if you flew into Pudong)
-Go to the top of the Shanghai world financial building. I never got to do this since it was still under construction when I was there.
-Go to the top of the oriental pearl tower. It costs like 140 yuan but it's still awesome.
-Take a river cruise at night
-Find this urinal at the airport.
-Go see the acrobat show at the Portman Ritz-Carlton hotel

Man, this thread really brings back the memories. That trip was the most fun I have had so far in high school.

Awesome Picture

Thanks for the tips, I will look into that stuff! We went to the top of the Pearl Tower yesterday, unfortunately it was pretty hazy. I want to ride the maglev, my parents had their driver pick me up so I didn't take it from the airport.

Just got back from Shanghai last week. The MagLev is great. 431KM/hour. The trip from Longyang rd to Pudong was 8 minutes I think.

Nanjing Rd is cool for people watching.

Peoples Square is cool.

Walking around the Bund is cool.

There is some area (cant quite remember the name or location..big help I know:insane:) that has a row of bars with live music, and the entire crowd consists of 'westerners' of some sort. It was a blast.

Slugger, I saw in your pictures you went to see the Terracotta Soldiers in Xi'an. Was that worth going to see, and can you see the Great Wall from there?

Shanghai is awesome. Go to the top of the building with the grand hyatt in it in Pudong. There's an awesome bar at the top looking out over the whole city.

There are also lots of cool bars in Xintindi (sp?). And we of course ended every night with an hour long massage for $8.

And I still wear my $7 tag heuer watch 4 years later.

It was really cool to see, but it's almost too far out of Xi'an to be worth going to. I think we had like a 1 hour bus ride there and all the soldiers look the same. I don't think you can see the Great Wall from there, but I'm not sure. I went to the Great Wall in Beijing.

I've heard a bunch of people talking about the Hyatt, we'll probably hit that up this week. Those watch people are so annoying.

My sister's husband is thinking of taking a Disney position out there, as they build the new Walt Disney World Shanghai...how is living out there? i hear there's a "compound" of sorts but i don't think even she has started her research yet and she has 2 little ones, one is about to start full time school.

Lots of cool bars and places to visit in Poontang.

My parents seem to be enjoying it so far, my dad is on a 2-3 year project here so its far from permanent. Shanghai is kind of like the NYC of China, you can find everything you need. I'm not sure about the "compound" type living, but I know there are several parts of Shanghai that are predominately westernized. I know there are several schools just for U.S children. My parents apartment building is mostly expats, not necessarily Americans. Almost all expats have a driver also, driving is a nightmare, I wouldn't attempt it here. Its extremely safe here for foreigners also.

Where is the sun in China? Every picture I see online and on TV, the sun is not shining. I could never live in a place where the sun doesn't gleem in the morning and where the flowers don't grow.

Shanghai is not compound living. There are certainly areas where many epxats tend to live, but it's not behind walls. Although I imagine there are some nice gated communities, much like the USA has in many places.

One popular area is the JinQiao portion of Pudong. Another is on the western side of the city at Nanjing West Road.

I know the American lawyer who started Concordia. He's an immigration attorney with offices in Taipei and Shanghai.

I'm a bit late to the thread Moto, too bad. Lots of great days trips possible from Shanghai. I quite like the many "water towns" on the outskirts of Shanghai. Xitang is an excellent day trip, although it's better to spend one night in the town itself. You could also take the high speed rail down to Hangzhou to see West Lake.

Another great traveller resource is Lonely Planet's website.
