Yes I'm new, I'm 15. But I see this term everywhere, can you tell me what it stands for and what it means? ACARS? Its probably something obvious haha.

google it! you know what google is? :D
Just kidding, I'm not trying to sound like a smart ass, there is a wealth of information out threre on tips of your fingers if you search for it. :)

Not cool, gentleman. We were all new at one period in time and it's a legitimate question.

ACARS/"Aircraft Communication and Reporting System" is basically an electronic method of communicating with the company (flight control/maintenance/etc), various functions of ATC like weather and clearances.

Consider it like a 1980's version of AIM chat.

Does it use punch card computing technology? :)

In ref to the OP's question, of course this info can easily be found on Google however sometimes when someone is starting out or has an interest in aviation it's nice to chat with those who have the experience instead of a cold soulless googlebot.

And, in the plane I fly that is newer than the B-777, approximately 1 of every 10 hits to the datalink button on the MCDU gives me a big 'ole DATALINK TIMEOUT. Nice.

Sorry! Welcome to the boards new guy :)

(and to be fair, I had no idea what it stood for)

Just another aviation acronym that you know exactly what it is, and what it does, but have no idea what it stands for.

ACARS: That's the thing that scheduling uses to tell you to call them when you land to let you know you're getting "re-routed" instead of "juniored" ... more aviation terms to learn.

Welcome to JC! I'm 15 as well. You'll find this place to be a great and reliable source for information.

Its used for company functions, some airlines use it to get weight and balance data, send position reports, call in range so the ground crews can get ready, ect.

Doughnut, awesome.
