Approach Overlays for Garmin X96

I looked at the on-line videos. The way they appear to be doing it is to create routes using the approach waypoints. They don't show a lot of it being used on the Garmin, but, based on the way they are doing it, there would be limitations compared to their own Chetah products.

For example, I wouldn't expect to see such things as holding patterns or procedure turns depicted. And it would also mean that you would not load the approach by hitting the menu on the destination in your current route plan; rather you'd go back to the plan page and load a new route and then have to do it again for the missed.

Even with those limitations, doesn't sound like a bad idea, but I'd really want to play with it before paying for it.

I'll bet they're not; not in the least.

You are not going to get all the approaches in the US onto your Garmin from this software. I'm trying to find out more from the company, including how much of any approach you really get, but if they are they are using Garmin's route function, you are limited to the Garmin's limits for that - which I think is 50. So that means 25 approaches (because the MAP is a separate route), assuming that you don't use the route planning function for the rest of your flight.

This is potentially very cool - but don't expect that it can do more than it can do.

I'm in touch with the company getting some of my own questions answered. The company is responding, which is always a very good sign, and I'll report what I find.
